CNN: Hong Kong reports record population drop

Aug 12, 2022 Around 113,200 residents have left Hong Kong over the past 12 months, ending on June 30, 2022, according to provisional figures released from the city’s Census and Statistics Department on Thursday. The new figures signal that Hong Kong was facing a continuing emigration wave. The number of resident departures over the same period last year was 89,200. Overall, Hong Kong’s population shrank 1.6% to 7.29 million people in the last 12 months. The 1.6% drop in population is the steepest decline on record, based on the government’s dataset tracking back to 1961. Migration expert Lucy Jordan, a professor at the University of Hong Kong, tells CNN's Kristie Lu Stout: "We are witnessing a historic departure."

Finally some good news about Hong kong, it's said that Chine put in place new rules which ban these wannabe whites from coming back, time to set in motion to replace gloomy and decadent hong kong population with patriotic , energetic, highly creative and productive people from the mainland, only this can fundamentally change the political and social landscape of Hong kong in a short span of couples of years.

.
GDP per capita of Hong kong is among the global top 10, so it shouldn't be too hard to persuade several million of people from the Mainland to move to work and live in Hong kong.

More than 113,000 residents have left Hong Kong amid an emigration wave over the past 12 months, contributing to a record 1.6 per cent drop in the population and marking the second straight annual decline in numbers.
Figures released by the Census and Statistics Department on Thursday showed the population slid to 7,291,600 from 7,413,100 recorded in the middle of 2021. The city recorded 61,600 deaths and 35,100 births between mid-2021 and mid-2022, leading to a decrease of 26,500 people.
The decline to 7.29 million people was sharper than last year’s 1.2 per cent decrease.

I'm surprised that HK's number of births (~35K) is quite similar to Singapore's (~32K) despite Singapore's much lower citizen population (~3.5mil).

We do need to find ways to boost birth rates in China, Hong Kong included. At the very minimum China needs to get the rate closer to 2 children per couple to have a sustainable population structure.

At this rate the population will drop by 1/3 in the coming 3 decades.

Hong Kong is over-populated. Good to know there is a drop in total number of residents. This will put less pressure on housing, in terms of availability of living space and rocket high prices.
