Citizenship Bill Will Strain India's Ties With Bangladesh," Says Former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi

The bill, which aims to provide speedy citizenship to non-Muslim migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan, was passed in the Lok Sabha recently.

The manner in which the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill-2016 is being portrayed by BJP leaders at the state and central levels will only end up straining relations between India and Bangladesh, former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi has claimed. Claims of "religious persecution" in Bangladesh only serve to undermine Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's efforts to uphold secularism in the neighbouring country, he added.

"This bill will strain relations between the two countries. This present Bangladesh regime has been helpful, and there is peace in the Northeast because of Hasina's decision to act against terrorist camps across the border. Hindus are safe in her country, the number of Durga Pujas is increasing every year, and here you are unnecessarily giving Bangladesh a bad name over religious persecution," Mr Gogoi told NDTV.

The bill, which aims to provide fast-track citizenship to non-Muslim migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan, was passed in the Lok Sabha recently.

Mr Gogoi said that in his 15 years spent governing Assam, not a single person from neighbouring Bangladesh had come seeking citizenship due to religious persecution. "I had a long telephonic discussion with the Bangladesh chief minister to discuss the matter," he said, adding that the BJP's campaign of religious persecution in Bangladesh is portraying the Sheikh Hasina government in a "wrong light".

The truth is, Citizenship Bill allows people to make voluntary decisions on their own to choose their destiny.

But this is really mad. Why should we give citizenship to any foreigner irrespective of their religious affiliation ???

We already have over 1.3 Billion and are struggling to provide jobs, food and other essentials a vast majority. This is just petty vote bank politics which proves NDA/BJP is just the flip-side of the same coin.

Very true. It is really sad to see the "Divide And Rule" policy advocated by the British are used over and over again for petty political gains (especially by the right wingers). These idiots irrespective of parties can't see beyond next 5 Years I guess. Ironically BJP/RSS is using it much more as a tool to materialism some of their declared/undeclared agendas beyond political gains. It's hard time educated Indian's should make a good choice. But I'm not at all optimistic, if more progressive societies like U.S can elect someone like Trump, we have very little hope when religion and caste and related hatred are so ingrained in our blood.

People never see the bigger picture. It's now about who will win or loose eventually with such a revolt across the nation, it is about how long it will drag the progress and development of the nation as a whole. See Syria or Libya as an example.

Comparing dictatorship with democracy is very childish emotional thing. If the bill is wrong then opposition should oppose it in a democratic system and rally the country to oust that party.

Any attempt against nation and it's established democratic system will be brutally purged.
