I wonder how we can increase the rankings for Indian universities. We score next to NIL for foreign students and foreign faculty. I mean we do have foreign students at IITs but only for foreign exchange or an internship. Getting them for a full degree course is not easy.

Don't you have a fundamental problem?

Students go to China to study high-speed train technology, supercomputer technology, robotics, dam construction (civil engineering), biochemistry, telecommunications, etc.

Most of these technologies do not exist in India.

Why would anyone study at an Indian university when you lack all of these modern technologies?

Foreign students study in China, because can they go and work for Alibaba, Tencent, Baidu, DJI, Lenovo, etc.

There is a bright future for foreign students in China. The prospects for a job after studying in India are probably not very good.

Umm.. NO.

We don't have foreign students largely because we don't ALLOW them.

Indian universities, which are funded by Indian taxpayers, don't exist for the sake of some ranking. They exist to educate Indian students.

Utterly false...
Foreign students for a country is money and is a testimony of quality...
Foreign student pay their university fees... some may have a scholarship...but mostly pay for it... and that' sonly for fees..let alone rent/transport and local biznesses getting that "student" money...
Foreign students give you the advantage to secure those minds in your own country, since most foreign students are above the average lvl...

In Europe we have many Indian students... many in the UK ofc... and in France... They pay their fees... and the good stay, find a job at a local biz... those who stay are among the best of "foreign" students...meaning it's one less in India per exemple..or any other foreign affiliated orign...

US was build upon this... and I think you know why now...

So, even "IF" Foreign students are not allowed... it's always a lost in your part... always...

And for your Q about ranking... well it's that ranking who push the "great" mind to come/learn and work there... and therefore build "somthing"
Every Empire/society/nation were build upon recognition...whaetver the field... THe grek Empire, The Roman/ the Islamic EMpire etc...

Actually not necessarily no.

It is only the western countries that get the best international students.

China for example gets a huge number of international students, but most of them are on paid scholarship, which means that China is in fact giving them money to come and study, AND, most international students actually get favor compared to Chinese students. For example, the international students studying in Universities like Peking and Tsinghua are hugely inferior to local domestic Chinese students.

In India, until recently we didn't want international students because our system can't handle domestic demand for quality education.

However, these days top universities will allow students to come in and study if they can meet the standards and pay tuition, but that will be very hard.

Nonsense. in fact there are tons of indian medical students studying in China right now.

For the same quality of education the chinese medical schools are easier to get in comparing to indian top schools and more affordable comparing to the US UK ones, so in recent years indians are coming in flocks..

It's a booming business for schools like Wuhan University, look it up.:)

Tsinghua Named World’s Best Engineering, Computer Science School

One of China’s elite educational institutions, Tsinghua University in Beijing, is the world’s top school for both engineering and computer science, authoritative ranking survey U.S. News & World Report announced Tuesday.

While Tsinghua has previously held U.S. News’ top spot for engineering, this marks the first time the school has overtaken the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to be named the world’s best in computer science. Tsinghua was also ranked sixth in materials science and 10th in chemistry.

Other Chinese universities to be ranked highly for engineering include the Harbin Institute of Technology at No. 6 and Zhejiang University at No. 7. Zhejiang University also made the global top 10 in computer science, behind ninth-ranked Hangzhou University of Science and Technology.

U.S. News & World Report evaluated 1,250 universities in 74 countries for its 2018 rankings. The top four overall spots went to U.S. institutions Harvard University, MIT, Stanford University, and the University of California–Berkeley, in that order, with the U.K.’s Oxford University rounding out the top five.

Tsinghua, meanwhile, ranked fourth in Asia behind two Singaporean universities and the University of Tokyo, and 64th overall, just ahead of Beijing rival Peking University.

“The schools that rank the highest in the Best Global Universities rankings are those that emphasize academic research, including by partnering with international scholars to produce highly cited articles,” said Robert Morse, chief data strategist for U.S. News, in the company’s press release.

For its 2018 global rankings, U.S. News said it placed greater emphasis on international collaboration, rewarding schools that partnered with their foreign peers to write and publish papers. Other variables considered for the company’s rankings methodology include research reputation, number of publications, and citation frequency.

Tsinghua University did not immediately respond to Sixth Tone’s interview request on Wednesday.

Rankings are based on a number of factors - I have a degree from USA, one from Europe and one from India - Indian universities can't compete in terms of infrastructure, quality of education but the annual fees are often less than what you would spend in a semester in the US or Europe on textbooks. Don't know about China or Russia but most Chinese students that I've come across are competent but lag seriously behind in English; but this isn't the case with Taiwan where the students speak it fluently.

East Asians generally don't speak good English, Chinese, Japanese or Koreans are equally bad in English, Africans usually speak good English but it doesn't make Africa a better place than East Asia.
