HANOI – A top Chinese diplomat will visit Vietnam this week after China’s deployment of a giant oil rig off Vietnam’s coast in May increased tensions.

Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi and Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Pham Binh Minh will discuss the oil rig when they meet at an annual bilateral event Yang is attending, Foreign Ministry spokesman Le Hai Binh told reporters.

Yang’s visit will be the highest-level meeting between the two governments since the rig was deployed on May 2.

“As we have affirmed many times that Vietnam has always been patient to look for dialogues with China to peacefully resolve the tension in the East Sea,” Binh said referring to the South China Sea. “This meeting, therefore, will surely be a channel and an event the two sides could discuss the issue to find out solutions for the current tension.”

Minh and Yang spoke by phone in early May.

The Vietnamese Foreign Ministry said in a statement at the time that Minh denounced China’s placement of the oil rig, saying it seriously violated Vietnam’s sovereignty and demanding China immediately withdraw the oil rig and its escorting vessels.

China’s official Xinhua News Agency, however, quoted Yang as telling Minh that Vietnam should stop harassing China’s normal drilling operations.

Col. Ngo Ngoc Thu, deputy commander of Vietnam’s coast guard, dismissed China’s allegations that Vietnamese vessels rammed Chinese ships 1,547 times. He said 36 Vietnamese vessels were rammed and damaged and that 15 Vietnamese fisheries patrol staff and two fishermen were injured.

He disputed Chinese accusations that Vietnamese divers left obstacles in the water to disrupt drilling operations. He said Vietnam did not use divers near the rig but that fishermen were forced to leave behind nets and other equipment because Chinese ships used water cannons to force the fishing boats to retreat.

You are becoming overly-romantic and dramatic all at once. Wait until the result of the meeting is revealed. Probably Vietnam's government is more prudent than some ultra-nationalist mobs. That's not surprising, though, nor is it peculiar to Vietnam. If mobs are allowed to influence foreign policy, be it in China or US or Vietnam, the result is a speedy failure.

have you read the chinese article?

we have frogmen that are not only the best-trained and most well-equipped special force in Southeast Asia, but also fearless sailors who are willing to sacrifice their own lives to complete a mission.

if I were chinese, I would send the second rig to the coast of Japan :enjoy:

You are too dramatic, my @Viet friend. Just a normal visit to teach the little brother about proper behavior and exchange of opinion and national interest.
my previous posts are a bit sarcastic.

by the way, you should abandon such "teacher/big brother" attitutes. The days are long gone, when Vietnam was called Jiāozhǐ, a province of China. Yes, we no longer pay tributes to the son of heaven. Wake up dude. Just consider Vietnam as for example Singapore.

but I can understand your bitterness to realise that Vietnam is sovereign entity

Believe me. We have no interest in absorbing 90 more million Vietnamese into our empire. It makes no sense for us to do so. You speak a different language, look slightly different, and your behavior is not the same as us Eastern and Northern stock. There is no reason for you to fear, my friend. With our non-intervention policy, we don't care what others do as long as it doesn't hurt our national interest. We only care about ourselves. Consider this visit a good gesture by us to calm you down and teach you the right way to diplomacy and proper behavior to settle dispute rather than you go around the world crying. It is just sad to see that. LOL

I have no expectations of peaceful arrangements from this man. Even if he wishes to arrange something peaceful, he wouldn't dare say it out for fear of nationalist sentiments from home.
