Chinese firm to establish metamaterial defence R&D centre

Jon Grevatt, Bangkok - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly

24 June 2015

Xi'an Tianhe Defense Technology, one of China's fastest growing private-sector defence companies, has announced plans to establish a metamaterial defence research and development (R&D) centre.

The company said on 24 June that the new facility will be focused on leveraging metamaterials - which are described as synthetic composites with a structure not found in natural materials - for military and aerospace applications.

Xi'an Tianhe, based in the central city of Xi'an, said that the R&D centre will house simulation facilities, an anechoic chamber and "other laboratories" to expand the theory and application of metamaterials for a range of high-performance products such as those related to sensors, stealth and electromagnetics.

China builds mystery midget submarine

Andrew Tate, London - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly

25 June 2015

China has apparently built a previously unseen midget submarine at its Wuchang shipyard in Wuhan.

DigitalGlobe satellite imagery dated 24 October 2014 showing the submarine was posted on Google Earth and was highlighted by a contributor to the Bellingcat open source intelligence website.

The imagery shows the craft berthed at the pontoon used for fitting out submarines. The midget submarine had left the pontoon by late November and by mid-January 2015, another submarine, probably a Type 041 Yuan-class boat, occupied the berth.

Based on the imagery the midget submarine has an approximate length of 35 m and beam of 4 m, suggesting a surface displacement in the region of 400-500 tonnes.

Good to see private defence companies coming up in China.

These are very important for the military advancement of China. Private companies will bring new technologies and increase competition in the arms industry.

Maybe. Private companies will sell out their country for profit. Boeing, GM have no qualms selling engine tech to China military if the US government did not intervene.
