Two Chinese companies have confirmed their participation in a solar power plant project in Chernobyl. The new plant is expected to revive the Ukrainian city, which is now nearly synonymous with the nuclear disaster that struck it.
GCL System Integration Technology Co. Ltd., (GCL-SI), a subsidiary of major energy group GCL, is leading the project together with China National Complete Engineering Corporation (CCEC). Together, the two enterprises are expected to complete construction of a more than 1-gigawatt photovoltaic (PV) plant by 2017.
CCEC will act as the general contractor, managing everyday tasks associated with the project, while GCL-SI will provide consultancy and planning services, as well as PV facilities.
"There will be remarkable social and economic benefits as we try to renovate the once-damaged area with green and renewable energy. We are happy to be making joint efforts with Ukraine to rebuild the community for the people who live there," said Shu Hua, chairman of GCL-SI, in a press release.
An anonymous GCL-SI employee told the Global Times that the project will not be based in the exclusive zone of Chernobyl, and that the site will fit proper conditions for construction.
“The environmental impact assessment report is being assembled by Ukraine. If we couldn't guarantee security, we would not risk it,” the employee said.
