One of my American colleagues in Shanghai back in the 1990s told me that before he came to China, he thought the Chinese people were overwhelmingly against their government. However, after working in China for a few years, he found that the Chinese love their government just like Americans love their government.

Back in the US after a few years, he wrote an article for a local paper in New York sharing his experience.

To the surprise of many Westerners, the Chinese support for their government and leaders is exceptionally high compared with the US and other Western countries.

In the 2017 trust barometer survey released in January of this year by Edelman Global Public Relations, the Chinese showed the highest trust (76 percent) for their government among the 28 countries and regions polled from Oct 13 to Nov 16, 2016.

India and Saudi Arabia ranked second, with 75 percent. The 17th annual report by Edelman surveyed 33,000 people in the world, including 500 in China.

This study contrasts sharply with several recent Gallup polls which showed dismal approval ratings by Americans for their government, president and Congress.

The Gallup poll released on Oct 20 showed that President Donald Trump's job approval slipped to 36.9 percent in his third quarter, compared with 38.8 percent in the second quarter.

Meanwhile, the approval for the US Congress from Oct 5-11 hit its lowest, 13 percent, since July 2016. It was a few percentage points higher than its historic low of 9 percent recorded in 2013.

Another Gallup poll released on Oct 19 showed that only 21 percent of Americans are satisfied with the direction of the US, the lowest in more than a year.

Dissatisfaction with the government remains the top-cited US problem, according to the poll.

Although the current 21 percent satisfaction/75 percent dissatisfaction readings are bleak, they are far from the worst to date. Those were recorded in October 2008, when satisfaction dropped to 7 percent and dissatisfaction was nearly unanimous at 91 percent following Congress' authorization of the Troubled Asset Relief Program to deal with the financial crisis. The highest satisfaction reading, 71 percent, was recorded in February 1999 during the dot-com boom.

Americans continue to cite dissatisfaction with the government above all other issues as the US' top problem. Government — representing a wide array of complaints about the federal government — has been at or near the top of the list for the past nine years.

Another Gallup poll released in May of this year showed that public trust in the government remains near historic lows.

Only 20 percent of Americans today say they can trust the government in Washington to do what is right "just about always" (4 percent) or "most of the time" (16 percent).

The findings contrast with the readings in 1958 when about three-quarters of Americans trusted the federal government to do the right thing almost always or most of the time.

Trust in government began eroding during the 1960s, amid the escalation of the Vietnam War, and the decline continued in the 1970s with the Watergate scandal and worsening economic struggles, according to Gallup.

The report said confidence in government recovered in the mid-1980s before falling again in the mid-1990s. But as the economy grew in the late 1990s so too did confidence in government.

Public trust reached a three-decade high shortly after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, but declined quickly thereafter. Since 2007, the share saying they can trust the government always or most of the time has not surpassed 30 percent.

Clearly the Chinese love their government is much deeper than Americans' is for their government.

Is it really? Or are the results "skewed" because of selective reporting, censorship, fear, and outright silencing of dissidents in a particular country that shall not be named?

Why don't you come to China and ask anyone on the street, would you prefer Xi Jinping as your President, or Donald Trump?

Donald Trump probably wouldn't even survive walking on the street in China without a whole battalion of bodyguards. Or even in many parts of America itself, he wouldn't even go shopping for groceries by himself without ending up as a stain on the floor.

In other words, would they rather choose systematic suppression of free thought or an ideology that breaks the barriers limiting the people's individualism and expression?

Are you really going to buy into CCP propaganda?

Hmm I grew up in Hong Kong, and went to an International school with an international curriculum. Where is the CPC propaganda?

The results are clear. The CPC lifted over 800 million of my fellow Chinese citizens out of poverty, a feat never done before by any country in all of human history.

Whereas Donald Trump may be the most hated man on the planet right now, and he embodies the true principles of American ideology. America has gone from one of the most respected countries on Earth, to a country where I wouldn't even visit on a vacation. Even the majority of Africa is a safer prospect than America, at least there are no Neo-Nazis and Black Lives Matter gunning down civilians and police alike.

And what is your evidence for this? Perhaps it's just me but I'm interpreting this statement as obviously biased against the Chinese government. Every government has its flaws and China's is no exception, but to say they intentionally skewed the polls is very weak ... particularly without conclusive evidence. Under the same logic, American polls were intentionally rigged by Obama and Hillary to prevent a Trump victory ...

Oh come on here ... are you really going to buy into Western propaganda? As a Westerner/American myself, I respect China's rise (which I've been following for over 20 years now). Just because they have a completely different political system does not necessarily mean it's inferior ... the "limiting people's individualism and expression" argument is basically an excuse for apologists jealous of China's rise. Surely China would not be this successful if it was truly "suppressing free thought and limiting individualism"? A simple logic litmus test should prove such statements untrue ...

To the Western government and people: we like to live in the so-called "tyranny country" and we love the so-called "tyranny country". If you feel more happier, you can imagine we are brainwashed, and we do not care that. Just, LEAVE US ALONE AND MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS.

Chinese are stuck with Xi. It seem Xi will be at the helm for next 10 to 15 years. While US can change Trump in the next US elections. The options for Chinese are limited, so it is better go with the government and hope for the best for themselves, while US people can take the matter into their hands and vote out Trump in next elections.

. .
Chinese culture is significantly different from western culture. Chinese culture is more collective leaning than western culture. Therefore Chinese do not place the same level of value regarding so called individualism and expression. Can't Chinese people have different opinion and choose their own path? Is Chinese gov't and its leader having a high approval rating really that hard to believe?

On the other hand, even if Xi Jinping were to become president of USA, he would not be able to pursue his agenda or anything because of the US Congress. The US Congress is holding almost everything back between Republicans and Democrats. China with its own political system is very lucky to have Xi Jinping at the helm.

Take India, for example. A human disaster in the making. Worse yet, they are (at least those non-Dalits who can read and write in their heavily illiterate country) happy about that.

The US people will continue to be fed with two options, at each cycle, the options seem to be getting worse. They are forced to choose lesser of the evil. Besides, US media and business are extremely partizan and corrupt legally. Hence, it is truth that get killed at each cycle. People are depoliticized.

Now, would you wish a Trump For your country. Or, would you wish to have a corrupt and historically inefficient government like that of India, a country that is famously filthy, dangerous, illiterate, badly built, and corrupt?

Just let everybody be. I wish India to have similar governments for eternity as my sympathy towards them declines. Besides, I need failures such as India to show in my classes Western model does not always work well.

I do not even have to revisit US installed wonderful governments in Latin America that engaged in mass slaughter.

Have you actually been to China? Do you know how crappy American infrastructure is now? I drove on the interstate, parts of it is as bad as Indian roads.
