Liaoning, is the first aircraft carrier commissioned into the People's Liberation Army Navy and INS Vikramaditya is the third aircraft carrier commissioned by the Indian navy since independence. India's first aircraft carrier INS Vikrant was purchased from the United Kingdom in the year 1957.

INS Vikrant played a key role in enforcing a naval blockade on East Pakistan during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971 and was also docked in Karachi Harbour on the 4th of December to symbolize ultimate victory and naval supremacy of the Indian Navy in Pakistani waters.

Regarding the Chinese aircraft carrier Liaoning, a Russian expert in an Interview to the Voice of Russia has claimed that the carrier is merely a test platform and does not have the capability to sail in high seas beyond the regional waters of China. Chinese Shipyards took more than 10 years to get the Aircraft carrier Liaoning sea worthy inspite of the fact that the ship never required any major design changes to its hull. On the other hand, complete structural changes were made to the hull and the flight deck of INS Vikramaditya and it took less than 10 years to complete by Russia.

In September 2013, SMN reported that the Liaoning was still unable to operate J-15s with a heavy weapons/fuel load because of the ship's limited size and lack of catapults. The U.S. Department of Defense notes that the J-15 will have below normal range and armament when operating from the carrier, due to limits imposed by the ski-jump takeoff and arrested carrier landings. A Canadian government report casts doubt on Chinese claims that the Liaoning has even tested aircraft operations in anything other than perfect visibility and calm seas.

INS Vikramaditya will boast more than two dozen Mikoyan MiG-29K 'Fulcrum-D' (Product 9.41) including 4 dual-seat MiG-29KUB aircraft, 6 Kamov Ka-31 "Helix" reconnaissance and anti-submarine helicopters, torpedo tubes, missile systems, and artillery units. These fourth generation air superiority fighters will provide a significant fillip for the Indian Navy with a range of over 700 nm (extendable to over 1,900 nm with inflight refueling). It will also be fitted with the state-of-the-art Indo-Israeli Barak-8 Air defence missile system which will be complemented with additional SAM and CIWS (close-in weapon system).

The heart of the operational network that infuses life into the combat systems onboard the ship is the Computer aided Action Information Organisation (CAIO) system, LESORUB-E. LESORUB has the capability to gather data from ship’s sensors and data links and to process, collate and assemble comprehensive tactical pictures. This state-of-the-art system has been specifically designed for the Indian Navy keeping in mind the essential requirement on the carrier for fighter control and direction.

Aircraft carrier Vikramaditya also boasts of a very modern communication complex, CCS MK II, to meet her external communication requirement. Installation of Link II tactical data system allows her to be fully integrated with the Indian Navy’s network centric operations.

pls there is no comparison

liaoning is way bigger than ours and in radars too chinese are pretty advanced as all their destroyers already have aesas

i armament i think they might have installed hq series for air defence

.
Silly, silly comparison. When the Viky comes to India next year she will be operational in a matter of months. It will take the Liaoning years to get to the same level of operational readiness- if she ever does. The challenges facing the Viky are numerous but relatively easy to overcome for the IN, on the other hand the PLA(N) is facing a monumental struggle- making a ship that was sold as a casino, operational, establishing a carrier tradition in a navy where this idea is alien to most and then to top it all off the fighters that will fly off this vessel are unproven themselves.

The fighters are based on the proven SU-27 family.

True India has the advantage in the fact that it has half a century of carrier experience but the Chinese will soon learn the game. Remember the inexperienced US Navy defeated the experienced Japanese Navy in WW2.

The Chinese carrier is 50% larger and hence will be a more powerful weapons system that the Indian one.

China will need longer to establish an air wing and develop an carrier tradition. But those things will come over time. But the fact is that the Liaoning is a superior ship to the Vikramaditya. The Vikramaditya has too many drawbacks and that won't change over time. And both the J-15 and the MiG-29K are unproven platforms.

PS does anyone know if the Vikramaditya has permission to sail pass the Suez Canal ?

.
well both are russian origin and were made at the same time....i hope both these russian brothers never ever get a chance to confront each other

by the way...how much did liaon cost to the chinese ???

INS Vikramaditya Originally built as Baku and commissioned in 1987

Liaoning Originally laid down as the Admiral Kuznetsov class multirole aircraft carrier Riga for the Soviet Navy, she was launched on December 4, 1988

The strip hulk (Varyag/Riga)cost $20 million, bought from the Ukraine, don't know how much the Chinese spent to refurbish though.

"based on" means nothing- The J-15 is still an unproven derivative. Naval aviation is dangerous at the best of times but then factor in flying large, high-performance fighters off a medium-sized ACCs by pilots who have next to no experience in such operations. It's a very dangerous game the Chinese are playing- everything about their carrier ambitions are unproven. They are either going to have to take the entire learning very process slowly or rush it and lose many machines and lives in the process.
True India has the advantage in the fact that it has half a century of carrier experience but the Chinese will soon learn the game. Remember the inexperienced US Navy defeated the experienced Japanese Navy in WW2.

And do you know how long it took the USN to get competent on ACCs? DECADES and it cost them vast amounts of treasure and lives.

How can you say that? As it is most analysts say the Liaoning is nothing but a training ship so even if it was 100% larger than the Viky that doesn't make it a more powerful weapons system. The Viky will be in operation soon, operating state of the art and proven machines flown by aviators who have been trained in the best naval aviation training institutions in the world by a navy that has more than half a century of institutional experience in operating ACCs. The Liaoning may never be fully operational, after all it was built at scrap price and refitted by a nation with exactly zero experience in carrier ops.

And both the J-15 and the MiG-29K are unproven platforms.

The Mig-29Ks has carried out hundreds of carrier launches and recoveries and have logged hundreds of flight hours on carriers and is certified for night and rough sea flying - how is it unproven?

LOL. Vikramaditya is 45,000 Tones and Liaoning is 53,000 Tones.

Seriously what makes you think that Liaoning is anywhere as effective as Viki !

.
 this Indian carrier is tiny carrier and a complete piece of junk.

The Liaoning is part of the Kuznetsov class carrier which there are two and the other being part of the Russian navy.

The Liaoning was supposed to be the latest carrier for the USSR before they collapsed.

The Indian Mig-29K is a piece of junk that has been shot down by everyone.

The J-15 is based on the Su-33. Any Sukhoi is better than any cheap Mig.

Indians talking sh*t again

There is no comparison between the size and capabilities of the Liaoning vs that Indian joke.

 Liaoning is 65,000 tonnes.

Nice try

I am yet to see a J series aircraft in battle. SO I will hold my horses before I spew some crap if I were you.

Liaoning is 53 050 tons (Standard-load), 59 100 tons (Full-load) and 61 390 tons (Max-load)

Vikramaditya is 45,000 tons standard load.

J-15 is a junk which even chinese scientist has said cannot take off with any significant armament. That makes Liaoning a sitting duck. A Target.

Mig 29K on the other hand is a proven platform and can take off with 5.5 ton of armament from the flight deck :D ...... guess what happens when Viki meets Liao ? .....Mig 29 K sinks it while J-15 struggles to take off from the deck with a load of armaments.

Indian noob.

Read this:
http://www.jeffhead.com/worldwideaircraftcarriers/varyag.htm

The Indian carrier is 45,000 MAX load.

Liaoning is 65,000-67,000 MAX load.

The Indian crap is not even in the same league as the Liaoning.

No Mig-29 will ever beat a Su-33.

The Russians are going for the cheaper Mig-29 junk as it's affordable for Russia.

J-15 is vastly superior to the Su-33.
