China's ocean tech lags 10 years behind developed countries: study

China's ocean technology lags 10 years behind developed countries, especially in exploration and engineering, according to a study released Thursday.

The study of China's ocean engineering, science and technology was initiated in 2011 with over 40 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) taking part in the study.

The CAE's Tang Qisheng said ocean economy has become a new growth pole. Ocean engineering, science and technology can support energy, mining, tourism and other industries.

According to official statistics, China's total ocean product was almost 6 trillion yuan (968 billion U.S. dollars) in 2014, up 7.7 percent year-on-year and about 9.4 percent of its GDP.

So, foreigners should not worry about Chinese projects in SCS. :-)

Only 10 years?That's great news。

Don't forget China is a developing country which happens to be far ahead of other developing countries。

Unlike a certain country,China does not pretend to be nor want to be seen as a world power。

China has got a long way to go。:enjoy::tup:

Good to see down to earth people like you, But seems some of your other brothers here like economic superpower think otherwise, to him China is already a developed advanced country and a superpower who is second to none. Hard to make him realise China is still a large developing country (albeit the most advanced) . Yes as you said China is doing well, but still has a long way ahead, considering the country was nowhere just 2-3decades ago, it has indeed moved up very fast.

Economic superpower said:
Only 10 years behind? wow.

China has made excellent progress then. Much better than I thought.

Thought you said earlier that China is already far ahead of almost any country bar maybe the U. S? So you mean you now accept/admit China still lags behind Japan (a developed country) ?

I've always said Japan is ahead of China in a few technological areas (industrial robotics, semiconductor equipment and a few others). What we have to discuss here is the technical gap in CRITICAL technologies.

What CRITICAL technologies is Japan ahead of China in?

Can you give me a list so we can compare. It's easy saying Japan is a developed country and claiming its technologically more advanced than China. But we need to be specific.

China has advanced technologies too.

From that list I gave you, I showed China has surpassed Japan in most economic, financial, energy, raw materials, agricultural and military areas. You said China is still behind Japan in technology, but I want to know which technology in specific. Because Japan has its areas its ahead and China has its areas its on par or ahead.

Technology must be in critical technologies. Making advanced gaming consoles is pretty irrelevant to a nation's technological capabilities. Also you must not confuse technology with a brand. Japan and China might have the same level of technology in a certain area but Japan might have a bigger or more famous global brand due to marketing.
Branding is different from technological capability.

Okay Mickey, give me your list of areas Japan is ahead of China. I've admitted Japan is ahead of China in Industrial robotics and semiconductor equipment. Now your turn.....

As soon as I read "According to study", i wrote this comment. Waste of time article.
