China's mega water diversion project starts trial operation​

HEFEI, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) -- A mega water project to divert water from the Yangtze, China's longest river, to the Huaihe River started trial operation on Friday.

The water diversion project, which is 723 km long and took six years to construct, will supply water to 15 cities in east China's Anhui Province and central China's Henan Province. It is expected to benefit more than 50 million people.

Friday morning also saw the start of the construction of the second phase of this mega project -- with an investment of 20.41 billion yuan (about 2.93 billion U.S. dollars).

The total investment in the first phase surpassed 94.91 billion yuan.

Besides supplying water for residents and developing shipping, this project will also be used for agricultural irrigation and will help improve the ecological environment of both the Huaihe River and Chaohu Lake.

According to Zhang Xiaowu, president of Anhui Provincial Group Limited for Yangtze-to-Huaihe Water Diversion, the project will supply over 500 million cubic meters of water to Chaohu Lake annually, helping restore the ecology of the lake. It can also transfer water to the trunk stream of the Huaihe River, in order to prevent it from drying up.

This complex water project overcame multiple technical difficulties during construction and also took biodiversity conservation into consideration. The channel was moved westward to make way for migratory birds, while multiple passageways were built to facilitate fish migration.

So is the water re-routing being done from a downstream river to an upstream river? kindly elaborate? This is something we need in Pakistan to re-route millions of cubic feet of Indus water that currently goes to the ocean when it can help us with our electricity production, ecology, environment, drinking water, and sea-food industry, as well as building new reservoirs and turning a part of a big desert into useful agricultural land, etc.

Some up hills pumping in some regions and go under rivers tunnelling are required for those South-North water diversions. Couple of short videos on one of those water diversions that solved hundreds of millions Chinese water usage problems in the North.

This is China's greatest weapon.

Most of Asia including South Asia/South East Asia and East Asia water comes from Tibet (river flows from Tibet). China can choose who gets water and who doesn't by diverting water flow if required. Of course China wont do that unless they have to, but it gives them greater bargaining power.

The amount of water collected in the upreaches of the rivers in Tibet are not that much so, the rivers in South Asia mainly collect water from the monsoon rains in the subcontinent there.

I think China should start a national water conservation project to reduce industrial and consumer water usage. As fresh water supply dwindles in the coming decade, it will become a strategic resource. China would do well to position itself for the eventuality in advance.
