China’s habit of pouring cash into strategic industries creates opportunities for corruption. Just look at the microchip business. The “Big Fund” was created in 2014 to spur self-reliance in chipmaking. Backed by state investors, it has raised 343bn yuan ($50bn). But several of the fund’s executives are suspected of corruption, including its head, Ding Wenwu.
The investigation may be motivated by more than just concern over graft. Chips are used in everything from mobile phones to missiles, which is why China’s leaders don’t want to rely on other countries to make them. But the progress of China’s chip industry has not met expectations. Self-reliance may be decades away, if it is achievable at all.

Made in China 2025 is still 2.5 years away. China's semiconductor industry experienced robust growth in the past 2 years even against American restrictions. Obviously there's going to be some resource wastage and corruption in every field, but China's progress has been steady.

Thank you Communist China bot : S. Korea and Taiwan are both in 5NM category. They are closely aligned with US and will never work with China. US has not had to do it as a country, as long as its close allies have the capacity to deliver those exclusively to western companies.

Also, US and Netherlands control the UV lithography machines that are used to make this (UEV). Those are under sanction now and cannot be sent further. It is a great accomplishment to have reached the 7nm for China, no doubt (and I don't say it sarcastically) but if this is some sign of huge China genius and west decadence, than now the dependency of non Chinese technology to make these at scale and economically and China cannot do it alone.

The iphone is in theory made in China but only 5% of value add (assembly) occurs in China. All the high value inputs (software, screen, chip) are all imported.

Not criticizing China, but stop making it sound that China is amazing and everybody is s**t. A bit of reality check needed.

In a globalized economy a lot of interdependence across societies/economies.

BOE made screens for refurbished iPhone 12's. Apple stopped production order for 20% of iPhone 13 screens made by BOE since BOE wasn't able to mass produce screens to Apple defined specs and cut corners without informing Apple. 80% of iphone screens are made by LG and Samsung.
