China's best pupil, namely North Korea to reenact the nuclear deterrent DF-5 ICBM first ever full range test flight
The need for China to raise all doubt in the West about the credibility of its nuclear deterrent has pushed Mao back in 1972 to perform a full test flight of its ICBM. Due to numerous delays and political changes, the flight test of the DF-5 would be demonstrated only 8 years later on May 18th, 1980, in the Pacific Ocean, and not in the Indian Ocean as originally planned.
This year of Fire Rooster will see a North Korean demonstration of its capability, necessitated by the West's scepticism. The missile will only be a modest Hwasong-12 IRBM with a maximum range of ~6,500 km. But the quadruple multiple launches will increase the difficulty level of the operation! The highly lofted trajectory is meant to escape all conventional kinetic interceptions, such as Patriots, SM-3, and THAAD... As a Mach 25 speed reentry will render an interception unlikely.
