Tentative Assessment On A Future North Korean Manned Space Launcher

Note: This earlier assessment is based on various sources on the internet, and might not be accurate.

Choson Sinbo, April 10, 2012 Press Release

The Second Space Development Five-Year Plan starting in 2017, will see more advanced space developments. In April 8, 2012, the general manager of Sohae SLC declared that North Korea "will launch a geostationary satellite in the near future", and that North Korea "will launch manned spacecrafts". To this end, Sohae was also designed to support very large 400t-class rockets.

The Iranian satellite carrier Safir-2A is the first version of Safir-2 with the name of Simorgh [Korean name: Unha-2/3]. Its length is 26 m, its diameter is around 2.5m and its mass is around 86 tons. Its thrust is around 143 tons. It can put 100 kg satellites into 500 km altitude orbits.

The next step is Safir-3A or Sepehr and Safir-3B or Sarir that can put 1,000 kg satellites into 1,000km altitude orbits. By adding micro thrusters and several side boosters, the Sarir heavy launcher can put payloads into 36,000 km altitude orbits. It is expected to be build during the fifth development program of the country.

New official artistic depiction of a future heavy launcher

Picture from 2009 Arirang Mass Games showing probably for the first time ever an unknown uprated launcher with four strap-on rocket boosters!

Seemingly a future man-rated heavy launcher, as a launch abort escape tower is clearly visible atop the launcher.

The length of the strap-on rocket boosters are less than a third of the total rocket length. Rocket possibly made of 3 stages; alternately made of two stages plus a manned spacecraft with Re-entry Vehicle, Service Module and Orbital Module in shroud.

Videos also show the rear bottom part of the launcher, revealing the exact number of rocket engines in the first stage...

In a nutshell, this new launcher might be very similar in conception and performance with the Chinese CZ-2F.

▲ Starting from 2013, generic depiction of North Korean [future] launcher widely spread in Chinese media.

▲ Screen capture from Arirang Mass Games 2013, emphasising new rocket evolutionary path, toward horizontal parallel clustering of strap-on boosters, in opposition with all previous mediatic representations of longilineal rockets, made only of vertically stacked stages.
Very stylized shorter and thickset 2 stages launcher, with 4 strap-on boosters, thus consistent with previous assessment on a Chinese CZ-2F-type convergent evolution.

First description of a North Korean CZ-2F-type rocket

2016/09/26

Since North Korea has mastered technologies for developing rocket for a long time, it will not be difficult to build a powerful rocket by attaching to the rocket's first stage, four strap-on boosters powered by four Paektusan-1 liquid fuel engines.
North Korea will be able to complete such a powerful rocket in the next few months.

@Galactic Penguin SST Manned space launch? I hope this is real. More hints?

As real as the Shuguang-1, Quanjunban-1 (千钧棒一号飞船), and CZ-2F bro!

But before there is a suborbital launcher based on the Hwasong-15 ICBM, able to place a 1.8 tons single seater crewed 'E1' capsule above the Karman line, at some 120 km altitude. And much more powerful than the U.S. 1960s Redstone-Mercury rocket.

Then there is the orbital launcher Unha-9A/E1 with a single seater crewed capsule, that can place an astronaut above 220 km altitude LEO.

Commentary

This launcher is not to be confused with the Safir-2B, an upgraded version of the Iranian Safir-2A (Simorgh) with two additional strap-on rocket boosters.

2. Screen capture from video of an Iranian Safir-2 with two strap-on rocket boosters. Seemingly called Safir-2B.

The difference is that this Unha-9 has a second stage of the same diameter as the first stage (both ~3 meters diameter).

Thus called Unha-9B for more clarity.

Meanwhile, the Unha-9B with two additional strap-on rocket boosters could be called Unha-9C.

And the ultimate evolution with four additional strap-on rocket boosters could be called Unha-9D; with an additional 3 seaters manned spcecraft, the rocket corresponding technically to the Unha-9E but officially called Unha-X. But due to the bad luck in East Asian culture (十 sounds like 死), I renamed it Unha-18 for the lucky number (1 plus 8 equals 9).

Or is it could just be an ICBM test to troll Trump?

These are not cheap rockets that you can test willy nilly whenever you feel like it.

Thanks for the updates @Galactic Penguin SST.

Let's see what happens in the next two months, whether NK can truly become the 4th nation to put a man in space.

To become the 4th nation to put a man in space is technically feasible by many nations, all a suborbital flight requires is only a small space launcher able to put 50 kg in LEO!

The Hwasong-15 ICBM is overpowerful for that mission. But, for the following orbital flight, it requires a payload capacity of 1.8 tons in LEO, the mass of the E1 capsule.

Nonetheless, according to the latest development, India will probably not be able to launch a man in LEO before 2024...

Two major hints indicating an imminent launch. Plus a third minor hint.

• First, the termination sometime before 12th January 2020 of at least 3 accounts by youtube, that were known to upload North Korean contents:
  1. Chosun Central TV -- 조선중앙TV
  2. 붉은별 TV [NEW] 红星TV (Red Star)
  3. DPRKtoday
This kind of repeated censorship is always correlated with some major geopolitical development related to North Korea.

• Second, the fourth known release of a photo from a wall painting found in the Pyongyang Sci-Tech Complex, in the section dedicated to spaceflight, and representing a rocket with two strap-on rocket boosters. With three children, indicating enough room for 3 future astronauts:

• Third, the upload of a very ancient animated movie, possibly from the 1980s or even 1960s, that depicts a manned rocket with four strap-on rocket boosters. The same rocket was reprinted and displayed in recent years on several occasions, such as the national exhibition of children's science fictions and models 2017. Same number of four portholes as the above rocket:

50 kg is possible if you intend to send a dead person without life support and re entry vehicle.

50 kg payload in LEO means a couple of 1000 kg payload in a suborbital flight.
50 kg payload in LEO is precisely the capacity of the Iranian suborbital manned rocket Safir-1D.

And this shows once again that all spacefaring nations have the potential to send an astronaut in a suborbital 120 km altitude flight.

Including the Taiwanese Tispace company's Hapith-V rocket! But with Tsai Ing Wen as President, forget it.

Indeed, only those few nations endowed with the most iron-willed heaven-sent leadership could make it: Kim Jong Un, Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

How about a nice bright pink colour?

Or for Uzi do it in the Israeli flag's colour scheme.

Coincidence? I think not!

@Galactic Penguin SST Manned space launch? I hope this is real. More hints?

These are not cheap rockets that you can test willy nilly whenever you feel like it.

Thanks for the updates @Galactic Penguin SST.

Let's see what happens in the next two months, whether NK can truly become the 4th nation to put a man in space.

The shortest way is a suborbital flight, by April 2022 with a Hwasong ICBM and Chollima (千里马号) capsule, similar in difficulty to the U.S. Mercury capsule on top the Redstone missile!

By then Iran would have tested a number of these "E1" manned capsules. As 5 have already been built in 2020. If a total of 7-8 are deemed to be a standard safety margin, before any new capsule could be man-rated (China only tested 4 before the manned Shenzhou-5), then North Korea only needs to launch about 2 unmanned capsule before its manned attempt!

Nothing comparable to the extravagant and fallacious Indian kamikaze strategy of only 2 unmanned launches before the ultimate manned flight!

Mercury-Redstone 3, or Freedom 7, was the first United States human spaceflight, on May 5, 1961, piloted by astronaut Alan Shepard.

A flight that occurred only 3 years after the first U.S. satellite Explorer 1 on 1st February 1958 by a Juno rocket of the same Redstone family rocket.

As the Hwasong-15 ICBM was first tested on 28 November 2017, following the U.S. logic, the first North Korean manned suborbital flight should be possible by December 2020!

The first American orbital spaceflight took place on 20 February 1962, that is a year after the first suborbital flight.

The human-rated Mercury-Atlas Launch Vehicle was derived from the SM-65D Atlas ICBM, and saw its first flight on 14 April 1959.

The first U.S. human orbital flight followed only 3 years after.

By the U.S. standard, the man-rated Unha-9E2 SLV should place a single North Korean astronaut into orbit by 2024, if the maiden flight of the Unha-9 SLV made of the Hwasong-16 ICBM as first stage and Hwasong-15 ICBM as second stage is tested next year (2021).

The Mercury-Atlas Launch Vehicle is 28.7 meters in height with a diameter of 3 meters. It has a liftoff mass of 129 tonnes.

It develops more than 1'880 kN of thrust at lift off with its main engine and 2 boosters combined.

The Unha-9 SLV is not in the same class with a diameter of ~3 meters, a height of 45 meters, and a much higher liftoff thrust of 3'520 kN.

Indeed, the Unha-9 SLV is in the class of the CZ-2 SLV, and the next U.S. manned space launcher, the Titan II, for twin seater Gemini spacecraft.

The upgrade of the Unha-9 SLV with another 4 liquid propellant strap-on boosters will double the payload capacity, similar to the CZ-2F upgrade.

The launcher known as Safir-4 in Iran or Soroush-2 SLV should be man-rated before the end of this decade to carry the 3 seaters orbital spacecraft "Mallima" (万里马号).

Another step closer to space with the latest North Korean milestone: the unveiling of its future manned orbital launcher, the Unha-9 SLV!

In two parts, with the first stage as the Hwasong-16 ICBM and the second stage as the Hwasong-15 ICBM.

A launcher that could within 5 years place its first single seater spacecraft into LEO!

Timeline

• April 2022, the 10th anniversary of Kim Jong Un's official titles as first secretary of the KWP, chairman of the Central Military Commission, and chairman of the NDC. First suborbital flight of 190 km altitude, first astronaut launched by a Hwasong-15 SLV.

• 2024: first single astronaut orbital flight at 220 km altitude LEO, launched with Unha-9 SLV.

• 2025: first single astronaut spacewalk, 220 km altitude LEO, with Unha-9 SLV.

• 2029: first 3 astronauts mission launched at 350 km altitude LEO with Unha-XE2 SLV.
