During the G-7 summit last week, Japan lobbied members to include a passage about China’s activity in the South China Sea, hyping up tensions in the Sino-Japanese already fragile ties.

I do not know why Japan pokes its nose into regional tensions in such reckless manner. As a regional power, it is understandable and anticipated for Japan to play a role, but, using international forums to harp up countries against China is not really conducive to peace.

China might take Japan as an actor by itself, but, as an agent provocateur, it is a big no. Japan should be able to do better than VN or PH.

I think Japan's involvement with the Philippines will be crucial in educating the Filipinos in the right processes to communicate with the Chinese. Given that the Filipino Government is apprehensive about China due to the 2012 Scarborough Shoal, this has led to unecessary misunderstandings on both sides. Japan, which has collaborated with China in writing and implementing a Japanese-Chinese Maritime & Aerial Mechanism , should educate the Filipinos on the same processes , encourage the Filipino Government to engage China positively to establish proper channel of bilateralism rather than the typical government rep to government rep chiding each other. That does not lead to proper policy implementation , rather, leads to continued misunderstanding, misinterpretation and irritation.

Restraint is the central theme. Manila's request for Japanese intervention is a tell tale sign that Manila wishes to cooperate. I believe that Tokyo can prove a conduit for reorientation and reinvigorating of Beijing-Manila ties. For the better.

A similar logic like this
