China urges international community not to interfere in Sri Lanka

China said Saturday that it believes the Sri Lankan government and people will handle properly problems conerning its civil war and urged the international community not to complicate the issue.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei made the remarks when asked to comment on a panel report on armed conflicts in Sri Lanka published by the United Nations on Monday.

Hong said in a statement that China has already noticed the publication of the report. He said Sri Lanka has already set up its own institutes to investigate relevant issues.

"The Chinese side is confident that the Sri Lankan government and people are able to properly address all relevant issues," Hong said.

He said China hopes that the international community could provide support and assistance to such efforts by the Sri Lankan government.

"We hope that the international community could help develop a favorable external environment for the Sri Lankan government to stabilize the country's internal situation and accelerate economic growth, and avoid taking measures that could further complicate the issue," Hong said.

Despite the opposition of Colombo, the United Nations(UN) Panel of Experts on Sri Lanka published a report on armed conflicts in the country on Monday. The report says that activities by the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam(LTTE) and the government in the final months of Sri Lanka's civil war might amount to war crimes.

Sri Lanka's External Affairs Ministry said Wednesday that the UN panel report on the country is fundamentally flawed in many respects and has divisive influence to the country that has just concluded its decades old conflict.

Tens of thousands of civilians were killed in almost three decades of civil war that erupted in 1983 between the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE, who had launched a separatist insurgency fighting for an independent Tamil homeland in the north and east before they were defeated in 2009.

China needs Sri lanka on its side, as it holds an important geographic position in indian ocean``70% of china's 'life' lines are going passing there`

thanks for the bold statement, well we can actually see the "motives" behind it. CROCODILE TEARS

India urged the international community too...however....

1)A large number of human rights organizations active in western countries - mainly Europe is leaving no stone unturned to uncover the Atrocities ...
2) The Tamil diaspora is pressurizing U.S and Canadian Govts to condemn and isolate the SL govt...

Personally all geo-politics aside , I would prefer the Sri Lankan govt to be pressurized to ensure the welfare of minority Tamils in their country ....else if the International community ignores their plight ,the SL govt would just be emboldened to disregard the lives and liberties of Tamils ...

However , geo-political sense dictates that most IOR countries India , China , Pakistan , BD etc all turn a blind eye and give univocal support to SL govt.

so mr. rayban, tell me why would hindustan want to interfere in Sir-Lanka's internal affairs? If you say hindustan don't then there is no point in whining at the thread title.

Simpe they were slaughtering many civilians who happened to be tamils. They are lucky India kept watch otherwise Tamil nadu might have taken Sri Lanka over.

Good once the international pressure builds up what China says won;t matter. I can understand Sri lankans frustrations but the tamils were reacting too injustices by the majority for 40 years. Payback's a Bit$h. The world has seen China act. The problem is that China has acted too prematurely in flexing its muscles. It gave the world the impression that the Chinese are in reality not very flexible once they attained power.

This simply shows that India is not as influential in South Asia as China, which is quite sad actually. The difference is as large as the US being able to hold Taiwan.

Did not know that China was an Indian Ocean Region (IOR) country. China can turn a blind eye because the Tamils who were massacred and are now living a dog's life are not of Chinese origin. Whether anyone listens to what the Chinese are telling the international community or not is another matter altogether. It is India's duty to keep insisting that the Srilankan Tamils are given basic amenities. What China is doing is sheer opportunism, nothing else.

axis...tell me what hard proof do you have? You don't stop whining.
