Seems you are ignorant to the highest level political coordination between China and Russia. For many years now, China's has worked unofficially as Russia's marketing team. Anything that China gives its 'seal of approval' becomes a hot purchase for third world countries. India and Turkey would never buy S-400 if China didn't first. And if Russia can create a fake impression of Chinese interest in SU-57, then gullible Hindus can again be strung along in FGFA project and milked of their rupees after they abandoned it last year.

What's China's incentive for helping Russia? To shore up its economic weakness. Russia is a military peer to USA, but economically it is little more than a gas station. After 2014 schism, the West bared its fangs to Russia and waged economic war, crippling Russia's economy with sanctions. Now its GDP is even smaller than South Korea's (!) Even those who hate the West must admit its financial weapons of war remain very formidable at this time in history. So China has to buttress what few revenue streams Russia has (basically just petrochemicals and arms) by buying oil and gas and promoting its weapons to third parties. Otherwise Russia is at risk of collapse, and without a Russian buffer state, China is surrounded on all sides by US client states.
