NEW DELHI: China on Friday slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Arunachal Pradesh, making it known that Beijing thought that the move went against attempts by both countries to resolve the festering border dispute.

China’s reaction to Indian leaders visiting Arunachal – which it claims as South Tibet – in the past has been quick and sharp; Friday wasn’t an exception, the Hindustan Times said from Beijing. It said Chinese ministry officials took time out from the week-long Chinese New Year holiday to issue a statement, condemning Mr Modi’s whirlwind visit to the northeastern state in strong words.

The statement said that the Chinese government had never recognised “the so-called Arunachal Pradesh” and that it was “strongly opposed” to the visit, the paper said.

It quoted the statement as saying there was “huge controversy” in the eastern border region between the two countries.

“China on Friday lodged strong representation with India to express diametrical opposition to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to a disputed zone along the China-India borders,” ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said. “…the act of the Indian side is not conducive to properly resolving and controlling disputes between the two sides, nor in conformity with the general situation of growth of bilateral relations,” Hua added.

The statement added: The so-called “Arunachal Pradesh” was established largely on the three areas of China’s Tibet — Monyul, Loyul and Lower Tsayul currently under Indian illegal occupation.

“These three areas, located between the illegal ‘Mcmahon Line’ and the traditional customary boundary between China and India, have always been Chinese territory.”

“We demand the Indian side to pay attention to the strong concern of the Chinese side,” Hua said. “We demand the Indian side not to take any action that may complicate the border issue before its resolution so as to maintain the sound momentum in the growth of bilateral relations,” she said.

The official news agency, Xinhua reported: “In 1914, the colonialists secretly contrived the illegal ‘Mcmahon Line’ in an attempt to incorporate into India the above-mentioned three areas of Chinese territory."

None of the successive Chinese governments have ever recognised this line. In February 1987, Indian authorities declared the founding of the so-called “Arunachal Pradesh”.

China’s reaction had been equally vitriolic when top leaders including President Pranab Mukherjee, former President Pratibha Patil and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had visited the state.

This is the umpteenth thread on the topic! Why are the Chinese and their 'all weather friends' jumping up and down at this silly news that no one takes seriously except the Chinese themselves? They seem to get orgasms each time Arunachal Pradesh is mentioned.

Since I've stayed in AP for close to three years, the anti China sentiments are extremely high. 100% Arunachalis hate the Chinese. And that's the truth. As it is, the Chinese are up to their gills fighting an insurrection in Tibet and Xinjiang. Do they want another in Arunachal too?

Good Step ...............China knows how to protect its land ... and will fight for it till the end .

That is NOT my opinion. THAT is what has been printed on the maps of India and UN where it has been categorically stated that Arunachal is a part of India. Chinese opinion on the matter does not matter. Or maybe China is so scared, so scared, like so very scared of India that all they can do is howl and protest in their state media.

And you shamelessly gifted 2000 sq km of Kashmir known as the Trans Karakoram tract in 1963 to China.

You guys never hesitate to use that silly line in all your discourses - "in accordance with the wishes of the Kashmiri people". So did you ask the Kashmiri people before handing over their land to the Chinese?

You are talking about Kashmir? Once the Gwadar port becomes operational the Pakistanis will be unofficially handing over their entire country to China. One thing that has always affected Pakistani policy is knee-jerk reactions. They make short-term plans ignoring long term consequences.

Example being Taliban, which they created as a tool against India not bothering to research possible future scenarios.

Second being jumping from the lap of USA into that of China. US exploited them during Cold War and China is using them as access to Central Asia.

It doesn't matter what the Chinese think, the BJP will not stop being proactive in Arunachal Pradesh
They should get used to it, the comfort zone they were so accustomed to during the Congress rule is now officially over.
