China, Saudi, Turkey want to construct international standard hospitals in Bangladesh

China, Turkey and Saudi Arabia have expressed their willingness to establish international standard hospitals in Bangladesh on the model of Singapore’s Mount Elizabeth Hospital and Thailand’s Bumrungrad Hospital.

The countries have sent proposals to Bangladesh in this regard and sought land for their respective projects in the adjacent area of Dhaka.

China is willing to establish hospitals in divisional and district towns if land is not available in Dhaka’s vicinity, but Turkey and Saudi sought lands near Dhaka.

It is yet to be confirmed how many hospitals would be constructed or if the Bangladesh government would be able to give them land.
Officials from the health ministry and Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) said the government is now assessing the proposals.

The three countries, in their respective proposals, said they have sent the proposals keeping in mind a huge number of Bangladeshi patients who go abroad every year for treatment. They sent the proposals during the prevalence of coronavirus.

Confirming the matter, officials from the health ministry and Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) said the government is now assessing the proposals.
BIDA executive chairman Sirazul Islam told Prothom Alo, “Bangladesh has longstanding relations with Turkey. They have shown their interest in constructing a hospital in Bangladesh as they want to strengthen the bilateral ties. Engineering Dimension of Saudi Arabia and China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) of China have sent separate proposals to build hospitals in Bangladesh. We’ve forwarded the proposals to the health ministry.”

CMEC China’s proposal said they want to construct one hospital each at a divisional or district level. They want to construct hospitals with 50 thousand beds in total in Bangladesh. They want to construct hospitals on the lines of Mount Elizabeth and Bumrungrad hospitals.

Treatment costs in their hospitals would be much less than the international standard hospitals, the China CMEC’s proposal said.

An inter-ministerial meeting was held in Bangladesh Secretariat on 20 October which discussed the feasibility of Chinese company’s proposal in detail.

The proposed hospitals would be fully online. A total of 70 per cent physicians and nurses would be recruited from Bangladesh while the remaining 30 per cent would be taken from abroad, the proposal said adding that they would establish a training institute for physicians, nurses and technicians.

We have discussed the proposal of CMEC China. The proposal needs further study. We will take detailed information from them

Saidur Rahman, additional secretary
CMEC thinks that the number of outbound patients from Bangladesh would decrease if international standard hospitals are established in the country.

An inter-ministerial meeting was held in Bangladesh Secretariat on 20 October which discussed the feasibility of Chinese company’s proposal in detail.

Saidur Rahman, additional secretary of health services division of the health ministry, told Prothom Alo, “We have discussed the proposal of CMEC China. The proposal needs further study. We will take detailed information from them.”

Prime minister’s principal secretary Ahmed Kaikaus, at a programme in the city recently said around Tk 300 billion flies out of the country as medical expenses annually. This huge amount of money would have remained in Bangladesh if the healthcare system were of good quality.

According to different estimations, around 250,000-300,000 Bangladeshi patients travel abroad for treatment every year. A big chunk of these patients go to India.

BIDA’s executive chairman Sirazul Islam said, “The proposals from three countries are an opportunity for us but we have shortage of land.”

It seems that Bangladesh medical sector has now "Ek Ghar Me Tin Peer". How come three countries send similar request to the benevolent govt of Bangladesh?

However, BD needs high quality hospitals with reasonable cost for treatment where even not so rich people can also get medical treatment.

Good for Bangladesh. Looks promising. Although it might monopolize market in their favor reaping benefits for a long time. But that's okay because clearly Bangladesh is lacking in this regard.

Not that Apollo BS, where you need to sell a leg and arm just to sit on the hospital bed.

I had my younger brother Angio Plasti (heart operation by putting ring to remove blockage) in the Apollo Hospital. Doctors did remove 3 out of 5 blockages and said he would die if the other two is operated.

I am not sure if it was a success or a failure.

It is no longer Apollo Hospital rather Evercare Hospital Dhaka. Apollo sold the hospital to Evercare group.

Bangladesh must attract private investments to the health sector. The government cannot spend billions of dollars to build hospitals across the country. The three foreign countries interested in building hospitals should be given tax exemption for 5 years if they invest at least $500 million in the health sector of Bangladesh.

Building hospitals is good and all but without investment from govt. for more healthcare professionals. It would mean nothing

Yes but these hospitals come with matching western standards or exceeding, but the fact is it's too expensive for the common folk. Have you looked at how much they charge just to sit on the hospital bed.

I'm sure the Turks and Chinese can come up with something more viable than some 'world class' South Indian hospital franchise.

I come from the UK where healthcare is free maybe I'm looking at it different.

Yes, with 5 blockage it should have been bypass surgery. But, it was doctors' decision that caused us to waste money without getting real benefits.

After all, it was BD style and the doctors were BD citizens with less sense of responsibility as usual for almost all people.

They see a gap in the standards of healthcare’s, seen potential customers willing to pay and that’s why set up hospitals here. Cost only goes down when more hospitals and healthcare professionals come online. But one thing is for certain, without proper health insurance plan, no common folk would be able to afford treatment. We see this basically everywhere

The doctors might have been novices. Have a heart patient in our family, I think one block and left ventricle dilation (not sure) ring would suffice but doctor recommended a bypass... square hospital.

New hospitals will increase the demand for more healthcare professionals which will in turn encourage more people to study in medical colleges to get MBBS degree.

People interested isn’t the problem. Lack of enough number of seats for medical studies is.

everywhere

I've been to many hospitals in BD where the level of standards ranges, one strange thing that I realized is that
many Doctors have no etiquette or manners when dealing with their patients, it a talk down on you sort of manner, I don't know where the "I am superior" kind off behavior comes from but that's definitely not how a general practitioner/doctor behaves here in the UK.

Some of these so called doctors couldn't even string a sentence together in English when they were explaining that my Grandma needed a supply of Hemoglobin lol. This is Apollo I talk about.

We used to and in some ways still do have a effective healthcare system. We couldn't fathom a healthcare system such as the US, in our bubble that kind of heath care system is non existent.
