China offers support for Karnaphuli tunnel

Dhaka, Nov 11 (UNB) – China has offered support for the construction of the proposed tunnel under the Karnaphuli River in Chittagong that will connect both banks of the river.
A Chinese delegation, headed by Chinese Ambassador in Dhaka Li Jun, expressed its interest in a meeting with Communications Minister Obaidul Quader at the Setu Bhaban on Sunday, Bridges Division Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam told reporters after the meeting.
He said a Chinese company has already completed a feasibility study on the proposed tunnel under the river. “Now the design and the construction cost will be finalized …the contract with China will be struck after that,” he said.
The progress of works for upgrading the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway also came up at the meeting as major part of the work being implemented by a Chinese company, said Anwarul.
The minister asked the Chinese Ambassador to pursue the involved Chinese company to finish the works at the shortest possible time, he added.
The Bridges Division Secretary also pointed out that issue of the construction of a bridge over the Arial River was also discussed at the meeting.
China will very soon sign a contract with Bangladesh for the construction of the bridge, he said.
