BEIJING: Deriding India's democratic system, official Chinese media here on Thursday defended ruling Communist Party's monopoly on power, saying if China had opted for democracy it would have become another India "where around 20 per cent of the world's poorest live".

"Hindsight shows us that the Western political system, which is not inherently problematic and was designed to encourage freedom, would have been incompatible to a country where efficiency has driven remarkable economic growth and social development," state-run Xinhua news agency said in a commentary.

"Further, China's feat of becoming the first developing country to halve its population living in poverty would have never been accomplished. Half of the 1.3-billion population may have been recipients of foreign aid, making it a huge burden on the world," it said.

"At best, China would have been another India, the world's biggest democracy by Western standards, where around 20 per cent of the world's poorest live and whose democracy focuses on how power is divided," the commentary said, mocking the democratic political system in India.

"In 2014, India registered a per capital GDP equal to a mere quarter of China's GDP," it said. State-run China Daily which carried Xinhua's commentary as editorial omitted references to India.

"Or, China could have become certain African democratic country that has struggled with civil wars, military junta, coup d'etats and the curse of resources for decades following the end of Western colonial rule in the 1960s," it said.

"The ongoing annual session of the National People's Congress (NPC) China's top legislature, provides a suitable backdrop to reflect upon the country's 61-year-old fundamental political system," it said.

It shrugged off the image of a rubber stamp parliament for its 3,000-strong member NPC for its routine adoption of bills put forward by the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC). NPC is currently holding its 10-day annual session.

"Seemingly endless political bickering, inherent in the Western model, would have resulted in political dysfunction, which in turn would have had catastrophic repercussions for a nation with a population four times as large as the United States," the Xinhua commentary said.

"Should China have adopted a system that facilitated lobbying among interest groups, it would have been caught in a self-perpetuating cycle of endless debates.

"Should China's mainstream political parties have been fiscally irresponsible and pursued interventionist policies globally, like in the United States, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) would have received an inflated military budget — at the expense of development projects.

"This situation would have fed nationalist sentiment, and wars would be imminent. This would have only been good news for opportunists and arms dealers, who would have rushed to cash in on the unrest," it said.

A system that allows plurality is fertile ground for election rigging, vote buying and the silencing of minorities.

In a country as ethnically and geographically diverse as China, the fires of opposition would have been stoked and divided the nation, it said.

A democratic China would have been like India at best: Xinhua

Democracy would have been catastrophic for China, state media has said, adding that had it adopted the democratic system, China would have been like India “at best”.

Like India, China would have been saddled with millions of poor people, the commentary added.

In a scathing and sarcastic commentary on the western-style democratic system, state-controlled Xinhua said a bipartisan political system would have led to endless political bickering and political dysfunction in the country.

“Should China have adopted a system that facilitated lobbying among interest groups, policies on domestic infrastructure to bills that had worldwide implication would be caught in a self perpetuating cycle of limitless debates,” the commentary, published to coincide with the ongoing session of China’s rubber-stamp Parliament, said.

At best, China would have been another India, the commentary said, indicating exactly how China’s state-controlled media views India.

“At best, China would have been another India, the world's biggest democracy by Western standards, where around 20 percent of the world's poorest live and whose democracy focuses on how power is divided,” the commentary said.

“In 2014, India registered a per capital gross domestic product equal to a mere quarter of China's GDP,” it added.

“Hindsight shows us that the Western political system, which is not inherently problematic and was designed to encourage "freedom", would have been incompatible to a country where efficiency has driven remarkable economic growth and social development,” the commentary said.

Political lobbying would dilute the unique strength and success of socialist China's "concentrating resources to do big things".

Taking a critical view of democracy, it added that a system that “allows plurality is fertile ground for election rigging, vote buying and the silencing of minorities. In a country as ethnically and geographically diverse as China, the fires of opposition would have been stoked and the nation divided”.

“Even in comparison with the Republicans in the United States, filibusters in Chinese Congress would have made any health care or poverty reduction bill extremely difficult to pass.

Further, China's feat of becoming the first developing country to halve its population living in poverty would have never been accomplished,” the commentary said.

Looks like insecurity of China will never change. After all the mainland real Chinese people were ruled by midget nations , small traders etc for only god knows how long they were been slaved . So now with lots of money and with bullying small nations or even playing as a big brother for failed states China trying to reassure it's people that those days are long gone. But as people use to say . " You can't straighten a dog's tail"

Insecure Chinese establishment know :

-it's people want to have more Accountability ,
- freedom to live a life of their choice,

- More justice to a common man
More over accountability in Military Spending .

Now this is the problem . There are lots of dirt under Communist Party . With democracy and human rights China will be shattered in to many different countries. So China compares with 2014 GDP of India . Which really under performed but what CPC will say in 2015-2016 when Chinese GDP will be reduced to 6%_7% when Indian GDP to exceeds 7.5% as per the IMF itself . Many have predicted a sustainable growth of 8-10 % for the next few decades for India . As new investment are pouring in after the new government took over in the mid 2014 . India already surpassed China in Service Industry . With new push for make in India Chinese will be just another country residing next to the Fastest growing economy , peaceful and prosperous world's largest independent democracy . Power of democracy is more powerful than dictatorship .

Same old Tortoise and Rabbit Race .

Conclusion : Slow and steady democracy of India is much heavenly than Fast and Steroids boosted Bubble Economy with No FREEDOM or democracy . Basic Human instinct is to be free . So one day or other this create armed revolution in China if GDP keeps sinking.

Another genius we have here.

China's GDP is so much larger than India's that even if they grow at 5% and India at 7%, China is still adding more in GDP per year than India. Growth rates mean nothing.

.
There is nothing wrong with poverty. But democratic system is clearly flawed if people can commit genocide and then become PM.

Growth rates means everything, same logic if you apply on China and Us case what would be result? Its only growth rate that made China to catch up with US. Now its India's turn.

Thanks for calling be genius so

No one was talking about size of economy . But the Growth Rates . More over China is not something like us guys always brag about. Just few years back India and China was at par . If we go even further the history states India had largest economy even after invasion of Muslims and Christians . So what gave you the impression India won't surpass China ?
If China can why not India ? With ever growing consumers with in the country India can easily grow at 8-10 % in just few years .

You are doing the same mistake towards India what USA and Europe did with China .
