In an indication of expanding military ties with the nation, Army Chief General VK Singh has left on a three-day visit to Mongolia even as a batch of crack Indian troops will be reaching the country next week for a round of joint training exercises.

General Singh’s visit, the first by an Army Chief in seven years, comes as India steps up military engagement with China’s northern neighbour and increases high-level visits, including one by President Pratibha Patil this July. Officials said Mongolia, which is landlocked between Russia and China, has referred to India as its ‘third neighbour’. Delhi has been keen to engage the country, which also shares the longest 4,677-km border with China. At 3,488 km, India shares the second-longest border with China.

While General Singh will be attending the centenary celebrations of Mongolian Liberation and will interact with the President of Mongolia and the Chief of General Staff of the Mongolian Armed Forces, a batch of 40-odd troops from the Indian Army will participate in a joint exercise with the armed forces next week.

Sources said India will send a sub-unit level delegation for the latest round of ‘Nomadic Elephant’ exercises with the nation that will take place from September 15-29. It is a follow-up of a similar exercise that took place in Belgaum last year that saw the participation of 30 armed force personnel from the Mongolian Armed Forces.

The exercise could turn out to be an annual affair with officials pointing out that India has similar regularised engagements only with the US and China.

A small batch of Indian troops also participated in exercise ‘Khan Quest’ in Mongolia from July 20 to August 13. The multi-nation exercise was focused on peacekeeping operations, an area where India is sharing its expertise with Mongolia. The exercises are the latest in a series of engagements that have taken place since 2004.

India has handed over non-lethal military equipment to the Mongolian armed forces as a goodwill step. It also imparts training to Mongolian troops on peacekeeping missions.

A string of Samosas !!!

. . . .
Good step but we need to increase the pace of the alliance.

Make Mongolia economically more and more dependent on India and have a military base there in future.

how exactly? Mongolia shares boarders only with china and russia and currently mongolia relies very heavily on trade with china., china is also Mongolia biggest trade partner. china is closer, richer and produces more than india and will see to it that mongolia would never be dependent on india let alone allow any kind of a "hostile" foreign base there.

on the military front, mongolia is stuck between the military powers of russia and china, commonly acknowledged as the second and third most militarily powerful nations, there is no way it can win any kind of conventional battle/war against either of its neighbors, thus it maintains a rather small professional force and relies more on diplomacy, moreover a majority of its equipment is from russia, there is nothing that india can provide that russia and china can not. thus the cost-benefit analysis dictates that it would never provide a base to india and piss off china there is simply nothing for them to gain and everything to lose.

First India want to have naval base in Vietnam, now you guy secretly want to establish another base in Mongolia. If India make an attack move against China from North, South and from Tibet simutaniously .China will be in great great danger. Very smart move from India...I dont think China will have any Chance against India in future conflict by face threat from all directions...

What makes you think that Mongolian leaders are that stupid ? lol

In the Post-Cold War era, China has taken major steps to normalize its relationship with Mongolia, emphasizing its respect for Mongolia's sovereignty and independence. In 1994, Chinese Premier Li Peng signed a treaty of friendship and cooperation.[9] China has become Mongolia's biggest trade partner and source of foreign investment as well as the destination for 48% of Mongolian exports.[10] Bilateral trade reached USD 1.13 billion by the first nine months of 2007, registering an increase of 90% from 2006.[11] China offered to allow the use of its Tianjin port to give Mongolia and its goods access to trade with the Asia Pacific region.[10] China also expanded its investments in Mongolia's mining industries, seeking to exploit the country's natural resources.[10][11] Mongolia and China have stepped up cooperation on fighting terrorism and bolstering regional security. China is likely to support Mongolia's membership in to the Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD), Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and granting it observer status in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.[10] People's Republic of China – Mongolia relations

Laugh at them wasting their resources, or to be more accurate laugh at their protectorates delusions
Are you aware of the alternate sea route via Gwadar or spending too much time at BR now a days ? Check out some articles on the Gwadar port potential

. .
Beyond trade i don't see much.
China has acknowledged that Gwadar’s strategic value is no less than that of the Karakoram Highway, which helped cement the China-Pakistan relationship. Beijing is also interested in turning it into an energy-transport hub by building an oil pipeline from Gwadar into China's Xinjiang region. The planned pipeline will carry crude oil sourced from Arab and African states. Such transport by pipeline will cut freight costs and also help insulate the Chinese imports from interdiction by hostile naval forces in case of any major war. Port Gwadar A healthy dose of reality ... Now how exactly would it be a waste of resources ? lol

Also check out the challenges PLAN faces in its own backyard.
The Indians are not so safe and sound either :azn:
