It's difficult because there's no evidence at the time. Making up numbers that are large but somewhat believable to the simple minded is indeed hard.

There is no evidence for 50 million. Nazi graves are still being dug up all over Europe, but no graves or evidence of a cover-up has ever been discovered in China, including by the US, of mass death during the late 1950s.

The death rate in developing countries in that time was indeed higher, definitely so during poor harvest years while under sanctions. China did not worse than any other developing country.

the difference is 2fold: he does not cite sources, and he does not have the ability to implement policy. Not citing sources means nobody really knows what you are saying is true or not, nor if true, how reliable it is. Not being able to implement policy means you are an outsider that doesn't know all the facts.

Chinese professors on the other hand have PhDs - which means at the very least, they have to cite sources - and often have the ear of policymakers or are policy makers themselves.

Wang Huning was a professor before he became a Politburo member, for example.
