In a show of support for its Communist ally, China voted in favor of a UN General Assembly resolution adopted on Tuesday, calling for ending a five-decade embargo imposed by the US against Cuba.

“Like most other countries, China hopes that the United States, in accordance with the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations and the relevant General Assembly resolutions, will put an end as soon as possible to its blockade against Cuba,” said Wang Min, China’s deputy permanent representative to the UN.

The 69th session of the UNGA on Tuesday voted on the “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the US against Cuba”.

The UNGA has adopted a non-binding resolution for the 23rd consecutive year with 188 in favor and three abstentions. The United States and Israel voted against.

China said on Tuesday that the US is in violation of the UN charter.

“This is not only a violation of the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations and the relevant General Assembly resolutions, but also a source of enormous economic and financial losses for Cuba,” said the Chinese envoy.

In July this year, Chinese President Xi Jinping signed 29 bilateral agreements with his Cuban counterpart, ranging from a credit line to modernize the port of Santiago de Cuba to cooperation in finance, agriculture, industry, health, biotechnology, oil, energy and environment.

On Tuesday at the UN, the Chinese envoy pointed out that with the struggling world economy and the challenges to food and energy security, the embargo and sanctions against Cuba are “more unreasonable than ever before”.

“We invite the government of the United States to establish mutually respectful relations. We can live and deal with each other in a civilized way despite our differences,” said Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez on Tuesday.

Beijing reiterated its opposition to the unilateral imposition of military, political, economic or other sanctions.

“When differences arise between countries, dialogue among equals and friendly consultation is the best means of reaching a settlement,” he added.

The United States imposed the blockade against Cuba in 1962 when both countries severed diplomatic ties.

Cuba has supported BRICS’ calls for less US and European dominance of international affairs.

Cuban President Raul Castro hailed the launch of the new $100 billion BRICS Bank as contributing to “a new international order.”

In a declaration signed in Moscow on 30 October 1943, the Governments of the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, the United States and China called for an early establishment of an international organization to maintain peace and security. That goal was reaffirmed at the meeting of the leaders of the United States, the USSR, and the United Kingdom at Teheran on 1 December 1943

lol and whats China going to do about it?lol let me guess: Nothing.:D

Well to be honest, im against U.S sanctions on Cuba, its been too long and times have changed, i dont see any danger cuba poses to the U.S. This is just rediculous. The U.S should lift the sanctions/embargo ASAP. it serves no real purpose today, apart from making common cubans life more tough.
Moreover Cuba has indeed been helping/contributing to improving health and living standards in many deprived countries in the world. So they are more responsible today than even most 'BIG POWERS'.

China will continue to work with Cuba as it wishes and sees fit, irrespective of what the US says or how it feels...

In LA, China is Cuba’s second- most-important trade partner after Venezuela...

Very soon, Western sanctions will be irrelevant since China is the largest trading nation on Earth.

Chinese president Xi Jinping arrived in Havana on Tuesday to sign 29 new bilateral agreements in finance, biotechnology, agriculture, infrastructure and renewable energy.

Beijing will finance a new terminal at the port of Santiago de Cuba, according to the news website Cuba Debate. China and Cuba will also cooperate on cyberspace issues.

On the economic front, Xi and Raúl Castro agreed on protocols to oversee the quality of the tobacco and sugar that the island nation exports to China.

Before the meeting at the Palacio de la Revolución, Xi visited historic Cuban leader Fidel Castro, 87, and presented him with “the respect” of the Chinese people.

China is Cuba’s second- most-important trade partner after Venezuela

“You are the founder of the causes of the revolution and the construction of Cuba, and you are the founder of relations between China and Cuba,”said Xi.

Xi and Castro were also expected to discuss the new conditions of the Foreign Investment Law approved by the Cuban government in March. This legislation, part of a government drive to
jumpstart the ailing economy, will allow foreign investors to bring their own workforce over to the island to work on construction projects.

The Chinese president hopes to get a sense of Cuba’s progress on economic reform, especially with regard to foreign investment, with a view to reactivating old projects and launching new ones.

This is the fourth and last Latin American stop for Xi before returning home. Before this, he was in Brazil, Argentina and Venezuela, where he signed off on multi-million-euro loans and dozens of cooperation agreements.

China has significant oil interests in Cuba, where it manages several wells in the northern coast. In June 2011, then vice-president Xi Jinpingsigned 13 energy and economic agreements with Havana, including two projects to expand the Cienfuegos refinery and build a liquid gas plant in partnership with Venezuela.

China is Cuba’s second-most-important trade partner after Venezuela, with a bilateral trade volume of 1.4 billion dollars in 2013.

In the last 17 years, Raúl Castro has traveled to Beijing three times to learn about the “Chinese experiment” of economic reform.

When Cubans open the flood gates to American tourists, the modern, electric vehicle fleets they see on the roads alongside the tradition cars from the 1950s would have been built in China and not Japan, not the U.S.

On Friday, Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD (Build Your Dreams) said it will supply Cuba’s tourism industry with something like 719 EV sedans. The order was signed in Havana on July 3 between Rodrigo Malmierca Díaz, Cuba’s Minister of Foreign Trade and Investment, Wang Chuanfu, BYD CEO, and Xu Qin, Mayor of Shenzhen where BYD is located.

Cuba is buying a fleet of fuel efficient cars to support its growing tourist industry. The order for its first 719 vehicles will be Cuba’s first fleet of tourist rental vehicles and BYD’s largest vehicle order in the Cuban market. BYD said in a statement that all vehicles in the fleet will be BYD models, namely the sedans Suri, L3 and G6, the SUV S6, and the MPV M6.(No Qin?No Tang?No Song?No Yuan?No e6?No e5?No Denza?

BYD’s press office could not be reached for further comment.

BYD first appeared in the Cuban market last November with its F3 sedan and S6 SUV during the Havana International Expo. The S6 model won the Exhibition’s Design Award. The Cuban government purchased 40 BYD passenger cars last year for tourism, but the Diaz said Cuba might eventually expand its order for government official vehicles. The retail market has not been developed.

BYD said it will build an after-sales service center in Cuba at some point in the near-future.

BYD’s claim to fame began when Warren Buffet announced he acquired a 10% stake(the stake is now much smaller after a few rounds of new share offerings since 2008 in which Berkshire didn't participate)in the company through his investment firm Berkshire Hathaway in September 2008. Since then, the stock listed on the Hong Kong exchange is up 355.05%. It’s up 33.3% year-to-date, beating Toyota and Tesla.

BYD got its start in the 1990s as a mobile phone battery maker. It has since evolved into producing hybrid and electric vehicles, with most of its bus line products being acquired by northern European governments.

The group plans to take on Tesla in the electronic car and EV battery market, backed by the smarts and the financial muscle of Buffet to make it happen.

Beyond Cuba, China’s recent green initiatives, including higher taxation on polluting industries, bodes especially well for BYDs future. Shanghai police recently placed orders for BYD sedans. At a simple stroke of the Chinese government’s pen, BYD could be firing on all four cylinders if state and municipal governments opted to replace taxis or diesel fuel burning busses with BYD vehicles.

Cuba orders 719 cars from China's BYD for tourist rentals

Chinese car brands like BYD have found a small market abroad primarily in developing countries.

July 3, 2015 - 11:14 am ET

BEIJING (Reuters) -- The Cuban government ordered 719 cars from China's BYD Co. which it will rent out to tourists in a deal that is a bright spot for Chinese automakers facing a weak export market.

BYD, declined to immediately give a value for the deal, which it said on Friday comprises several fuel-burning models rather than the electric and hybrid vehicles the automaker is better known for.

Albeit small, the deal contrasts with the 13 percent year-on-year slump in auto exports from China for January through May, according to the latest data available from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

Chinese car brands like BYD have found a small market abroad primarily by peddling their cars in developing countries.

Exports remain a very small portion of revenue for Chinese automakers. China exported only 70,800 cars in May compared to 1.9 million vehicle sales overall.
