China Buys $73.6 Million Worth Of British Pig Semen
Despite being home to half the world's pigs – and the largest consumers of pork in the world - the authorities in Beijing are concerned about the quality of their stock.
The plan is now for UK boars to improve their genetic make-up.
Britain has agreed to start shipping pig semen to China, in a deal worth millions to the pig industry.
The deal was agreed by the two countries during a three-day trade visit by David Cameron, the Prime Minister, to China.
Half of the world's pigs are in China and improving pig genetics is key to China as pig meat is one of their main sources of protein.
Officials said the deal was worth potentially £45 million a year to British pig producers. Exports should start in the spring.
Owen Paterson, the Environment secretary who is accompanying the Prime Minister on the trip, helped clinch the deal.
Mr Paterson has now turned his attention to finding a market in China for pigs' trotters, which are thrown away when the animals are slaughtered.
Pigs' trotters are viewed as a delicacy in China, and the Government estimates that the market could be worth £7.5 million a year to Britain if exports are allowed to start.
A Number 10 spokesman said: "We're doing all we can to ensure that businesses up and down the country reap the rewards from our relationship with China. And that includes our pig farmers.
"This new deal to export pig semen will be worth £45 million to UK firms and means Britain's best pigs will help sustain the largest pig population in the world.
"And we're not stopping there, we're talking to the Chinese about serving up pigs trotters on Beijing's finest dining tables. That would be a real win-win – a multi-million pound boost for Britain and a gastronomic treat for Chinese diners.”
Last year Mr Paterson successfully persuaded Russia to agree to accept British beef exports.
Mr Paterson is now understood to be looking at exporting waste parts of slaughtered chickens, in a move which could be worth £70 million a year to British farmers.
