What's new

China built fleet of naval surveillance ships = more than other 5x nations ships

In fact though many of us laugh at India's chaotic/inefficient democratic system, its still the best for the else it would have been divided into several different countries a while ago. Lol After all, the people get the government they deserve. :)
That part is true.

Interesting bro, I never knew there is a plan for a bigger stealth corvette. Is there any link for more info on that design? (@Carlosa I think you are a fan of fast compact corvettes, I'm guessing they are around 1600ton).

I've read about Vietnam exploring the possibility of getting TOT from Indonesia a while ago. I'm not sure if they are still looking further into that possibility or not.

That LPD offer is interesting, but I'm not sure if VN has the budget to operate such big ship when they need to modernize in other areas. But I could be wrong.
stealth corvette/frigate is nice. but no, not such big LPD. our shipyards can build landing ships. such ship is a sitting duck for chinese prirates. if necessary, we can produce 100 small and medium size transport ships, for up to 4 battle tanks and so. what we need is frigates, destroyers in the near future and aircraft carriers in the long term. izumo and the likes.

Bro you are funny. You can keep your hope for destroyers, but please forget about aircraft carriers. Spratly is right next door within reach of the Su-30. Why would you need an AC? You want to invade Australia?

I will reveal you a secret, but pls don´t forward this info to our enemy.

trust me. since ancient times, vietnam military strategy is to find ways how to stop chinese intimidation.
you can go back and read our naval strategy since the independence from the han rule. it is as follows:
first we try to acquire the hardware what the chinese have. and second adopt a suitable military tactic to defeat them.

our problem has always been the same: how to fund the acquisition? :D

.
I bet china will never dare to use aircraft carrier to assault a country with a formidable navy and airforce as japan and vietnam. not to mention, from japan and Vietnam shore, any chinese warships within 300km distance can be taken on by our antiship missiles.

aircraft carrier is usually a tool to show off, intimidating weak opponents. but hey, I like aircraft carrier for our navy.

I'm afraid I have to agree with Indos on this one my friend Viet. Vietnam doesn't need and aircraft carrier, destroyer or LPD . its wayyy beyond your capabilities/need. That's for big powers/countries who want to project power like Russia, U.S, China, Britain, France etc. Vietnam doesn't need that and can't afford it anyway. Focus on air defence systems, getting some submarines(as it has done) and anti ship missiles/fighter to defend its shores/islands close to home. Any offensive white elephant large equipment will be easy target for the Chinese. And no Vietnam shouldnt fall in the trap of thinking it an defeat China in a naval conflict. You will lose all your islands believe me. Vietnam ought to strive to keep the status quo as much as possible since you hold most of the islands in spratlys. :)

No, Viet Nam does not need everything that her enemy has. Did Vietnam possess nuke back in 1979? No.

Viet Nam just need 3 things:

1. Long range missiles capable of carrying nuke warhead.

2. Nuke warhead.

3. A solid Air defence to minimize retaliation.

With those 3, you don't need an AC.

Oh, and one more thing

the problem is the Chinese don´t want to listen. they don´t want to maintain the status quo, either.

you know, we want a peaceful solution and maintain the status quo as long as the final solution is not reached. this message was sent to the UN after we signed the Unclos and upon the ratification:

Declarations or Statements upon UNCLOS ratification

Viet Nam Upon ratification
The National Assembly reiterates Viet Nam's sovereignty over the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagoes and its position to settle those disputes relating to territorial claims as well as other disputes in the Eastern Sea through peaceful negotiations in the spirit of equality, mutual respect and understanding, and with due respect of international law, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and of the sovereign rights and jurisdiction of the coastal States over their respective continental shelves and exclusive economic zones;

the concerned parties should, while exerting active efforts to promote negotiations for a fundamental and long-term solution, maintain stability on the basis of the status quo, refrain from any act that may further complicate the situation and from the use of force or threat of force.

I think we need to increase our firepower at sea. our current naval assets are not enough to discourage the Chinese from their policy of intimidation. small frigates won´t impress them, but destroyers.

Lool you really think Vietnam can afford destroyers and aircraft carriers? Even the Chinese just got a refurbish aircraft carrier as recently as 2011. They are still struggling to build one from scratch. India also got its kolkotta destroyers recently(even so with many foreign systems/equipment on board) and the costs alone are huge in the billions of dollars. What's Vietnam defence budget? Not to mention you are still an underdeveloped/poor country (poorer than Philippines) . you have other priorities than following white elephant projects that will lead you nowhere. Except you want to be another north Korea.

Well, it is just an idea I believe since our government also has a national corvette program. PT Lundin ( North Sea Boat) is believed to seek that opportunity. With SAAB backing, it has more confidence now on proposing corvette model. But actually recent model (65 m long without helicopter landing) has already had a sophisticated system, the vessel is already enough to be head to head with enemy corvette/ frigate. On ASW side, I believe the focus now is to acquire CN 235 MPA/ ASW version as recent news reveals it instead of adding more ASW corvette. Our new CN 235 MPA is also able to bring missile/ torpedo now.

On the other hand, PT PAL will likely be focusing on national frigate program, which means less competitor on domestic corvette market. PT PAL potentially will use SIGMA model with a possibility to employ its own frigate design on the program. They do have a plan on making indigenous design at 2017 though, but we don't know yet whether the government will back such program.

Talking about our LPD, PT PAL high officer recently has said that the company is in talk with some South East Asian country about producing Makassar class LPD for them. Previous deal with The Philippine give a hint that some SEA countries has a need to such vessel.

we had a nuclear umbrella. the USSR was our military ally back then. when the war broke out in 1979, the russians deployed 600,000 men army to the USSR-china border. AND mobilized about 400 short and medium tactical nuclear missiles. china could be turned into nuclear ashes if they were the first that resorted to nuclear strikes.

yes, I believe we need similar umbrella today, if we feel the Chinese begin to run amok.

no, sub-Mekong delta empire is niceguy´s dream :D

bro, you should place more trust on Vietnam.

Wow, I'm impressed by Vietnam's number. :), it has wayyyy more than Malaysia and indonesia combined. As always Philippines comes last.: (

We Filipinos love shooting ourselves in the foot.

Basically, our politicians are more concern of their political status and "legacy" as well as taking more wealth into their several bank accounts. Our vice-president is even more concern of people criticizing them, called it "bullying" and even said his sentiments of "anti-bullying law against public officials" which is almost sound like restricting freedom of speech and expression.

They care more about nonsense thing rather than the security of the country since our politicians are likely to run (abandon the country) to USA when a shooting war breaks out here between China and Philippines.

It's not about trusting bro. There are things that are just above you for now. You have other more pressing needs/priorities. As I said except you want to be another north Korea (at lest they do have some skills tovbuild such weapons) who focuses on military while ignoring other more pressing economic needs of its people/country

Look even more funnier than Viet's claim of aircraft carriers/destroyers . you think Vietnam should build nukes? Even if they could (which I font believe they can as of now), they will be sanctioned/isolated by the international community (yes even the U.S/west will join)I

I've told Niceguy who claims Vietnam should build nukes the same word, I warned that Vietnam will get sanctioned by the world community, but he refused to accept my kindness.

I think China should be the one who trying to help Vietnam to get away from those sanction at the price of Vietnam dependency from China, and at the same time working so hard to made their development process keep stalled and unfinished like what happened in Iran
