RMB in full vogue in South Korea

SEOUL, July 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese tourists no long need to bring a large amount of U.S. dollars when travelling in South Korea, as they can choose to use China UnionPay, or even RMB in cash in some stores.

"The store I just passed by offers five percent discount for China UnionPay users. Some stores in Seoul even accept China's RMB in cash," a Chinese tourists surnamed Xiao told Xinhua.

For Chinese tourists, it is more convenient for them to use China UnionPay and cash, or they have to spend much more time on finding currency exchange booths and deciding on a favorable price.

"I find China's RMB is highly recognized in Seoul," Xiao said.

China is the first source of tourists for South Korea. The number of Chinese tourists visiting South Korea reached one million in 2008, compared with around 710,000 in 2005. From January to May this year, the number exceeded two million.

A shop owner at Seoul's Myeong-dong commercial district told Xinhua that he noticed the increasing number of Chinese tourists and it was impossible not to accept China UnionPay.

China UnionPay entered South Korea in 2005, and nearly all South Korean stores accept it, said Sheng Jinchun, China UnionPay's representative to South Korea.

Tourists users can book hotel, shopping and sightseeing with China UnionPay cards, and they can also withdraw cash from more than half of the ATMs in South Korea. During the 2014 Incheon Asian Games, they can even pay for taxis with the cards, Sheng said.

Chinese tourists can also easily find exchange booths in Myeong-dong and other commercial districts. Some shopping malls even accept China's RMB in cash.

South Korean banks have also witnessed a large amount of RMB deposits since the second half of last year, with the total volume reaching 11.3 billion U.S. dollars at the end of May.

South Korea expressed its intent in April to build up RMB offshore trading markets. With the increasing internationalization of the Chinese currency and the deepening of bilateral financial cooperation, the RMB fervor in South Korea will continue.

Nowadays it is easier having your weekends on SK's Chejudo(Jizhoudao)than in many places in China。

There are tens of thousands of Chinese nationals(tourists etc)on the tiny island on any given day of the year。

Lots of Chinese owned properties and biz joints too。

Too many to have started uneasiness among some South Koreans。:disagree:

Yes.....China has better cultural resources to produce high quality drama, but most dramas can't get rid of censorship influence. I Do you hear 李敏镐?A famous korean drama actor, Many Chinese women are crazy about him.

What can you expect from North Korea now? We are still brothers if they discard the current regime.

Yeah heard of him, not seen him nor care. Chinese women can be crazy sometimes.

China and Korea biliteral trade amounts to 270 billion. Very huge number. Direct trading is soon. We will also talk about FTA

Yes. I guess the CJK FTA will not work out so soon due to obvious Japanese geopolitical servitude toward the US and re-militarization. So, it makes sense to speed up the China-South Korea FTA talks. This will further push Japanese firms into corner. Also, Taiwan's sold-outs will feel more heat as they are squeezed out of China's market by the Korean companies. Korea might as well be China's Canada.

Such type of waves come and go.

The TV series from japan used to quite popular 20 years ago, then Taiwan's, Hongkong's, Singapore's...

It all has its time in popularity. However, there is nothing deep inside. So it comes and goes just like the so-called NY best sellers. It never lasts like the classics as: Great Expectations, War and Peace...

So there is no need to worry that much.

Seems that Chinese people have gone nuts over korean dramas that supposed to mimic korean society but does not in reality. They use the same formula and it's so damn long. I guess Chinese producers and writers have to step it up.

I agree, as for FTA, we will proceed quickly, I think CJK FTA is impossible in the near future, because both Korea and Japan want bilateral trade with China respectively, not three party trade deal, because many Korean and Japanese products are directly competitive, like the cars, electronic product, but China need them all. More importantly, Japan seems to be more interested in TPP. So, the US intervention is still a unstable factor in East Asia, as long as China grow stronger, we will squeeze US slowly out of this region and help Japanese slaves get rid of US colonization, at that time, Japanese will have no choice but to join.

I foresee China llosing Interest in Pakistan in same manner in near future. China is coming close to India.

Remember China's conflict with South Korea was an indirect one, the issue being rather the US military presence there whereas the conflict with India is a direct one. While Chinese public sentiment towards India is non-hostile, the same thing can't be said of Indian's. Under such condition, the possibility of a reapproachment between the two is remote. Moreover, China's interest in Pakistan extend beyond just an alliance against India, so even if Sino-India relation improves, these interest will still presist.
