Firstly, you should separate the word Uighur and Muslim because they are not the same.

Uighur are not being targeted and sent to concentration camps for the reason they follow Islam, it is only because they are Uighur. This is evident by the fact of how non-Uighur Muslims are perfectly fine in China.

This is my two cents. To me religion isn't important since it's not permanent. Religion can be changed. To me ethnicity or race is important since it's permanent and can never be changed.
Today you're a Christian, tomorrow I lose faith and convert to Buddhist. Voila, I am no longer a Christian. Same goes to any religion.

Tell that to the Anatolian Turks, when the Turks erased the Roman/Greek culture of the Anatolians made their language and culture Turkic. And their culture should be Greek and their language should be Greek and Roman.
