Publication date : 9/27/2018

China has strengthened its position as the world's largest fruit and vegetable producer, according to the latest FAO statistics, surpassing India and the United States.

According to the latest figures, corresponding to the year 2016, China's fresh fruit and vegetable production amounted to 708 million tons; up 3% compared to a year earlier.

The country accounts for 39% of world's fruit and vegetable production, followed by India (10%) and the US (4%).

The Chinese vegetable production amounted to 448 million tons, compared to 447 million tons in 2015, with potatoes, tomatoes and cabbages as the most important products.

Meanwhile, the country's fruit production amounted to 259 million tons, compared to 249.5 million tons a year earlier, and with watermelons, apples and pears as the top products.

For its part, India produced 180 million tons, the same volume as in 2015, consisting of 105.5 million tons of vegetables and 74.3 million tons of fruit.

The US ranked third with 71.6 million tons, 1.3% less than in 2015, when 72.6 million tons were produced. The US production consisted of 45 million tons of vegetables and 26.6 million tons of fruit.

Other large producers were Russia (48.6 million tons), Turkey (47.8 million tons), Brazil (45.4 million tons), Mexico (32.7 million tons), Iran (32.2 million tons), Ukraine (32 million tons) and Spain (31.2 million tons), according to FAO data for 2016.

A few days ago, an official from China's ministry of agriculture said China has achieved complete food security, but, in order to balance trade with other countries, China has allowed food imports.

Most countries have only fruits, vegetables and other type of foods to sell as part of their foreign trade.

However, importing food does not mean China does rely on foreign sources to provide basic nutrition.

Xinjiang is China's biggest fruits growing base and known as " The lands of fruits 瓜果之乡" in China

Uighur girls showing you Xinjiang fruits, beautiful and declicious, as the girl says in the video " I love Xinjiang, I love China".

One fifth of the world's population but almost half of the world fruits and vegetable production, fairly enough.

Xinjiang's 哈密瓜 is quite popular here. But year by year more expensive :mad:

That's thanks to attention by the early founders paid to agriculture.

Mainland China is not a favorable land for farming. But, China's farmers are hardworking and the government does good planning.

Thus, although China has relatively small land suitable for farming, it is able to grow nearly half of the global fruits and veggies.

China should have a very strong agri-business. It must be able produce world class companies like John Deere, Kubota, New Holland/IHI Case etc.

But I am not sure if China has global faming machinery companies or not.

The total amount of economic output is important, but more important is
1) continuous improvement of unit output efficiency;
2) reduction of fertilizer and pesticide use;
3) reduction of environmental pollution;
4) sustainable agricultural development,;
5) Constantly develop agricultural science and technology and agricultural equipment, and continue to declare agricultural inventions and practical patents.

China is amazing. Keep in mind, China has less than 10 percent of world arable land.

That's n order to balance the trade. Otherwise, countries like yours have nothing meaningful that China likes to buy. All you have is your natural resources.

Though I appreciate China here for this feat, but I also wish that they should adopt clean way of farming, like recently I learned the big gralic(easy to peel) from China which I use to buy is bleached that's why it does not have any roots, looks super clean and very white, same goes there cauliflower produce.

There is a reason why China now has a longer life-span than average USian.

Everyday is progress, not regress.

China, as a large developing country, is better positioned than many other developing and even some developed countries in terms of quality and health of fruits and vegetables.

Even Chinese bleached garlic is better than Indian products.
Just hearing Indian food will make people diarrhea.

Actually CN try to sanction VN after 2014 oil rig incident when we beaten up so many CNese-TWese. CN try to buy Nothing from VN, but u guys are just too bad at handling pig and shrimp disease, so u guy now have no choice but to buy from VN.

Under US sanction, if CN dont buy pig, shrimp from countries like VN, then u guys only have sick pig, sick shrimp to eat.

CN cant even control pig and shrimp disease, so CN fruit also toxic and dangerous to eat, too.. Normally when a normal VNese accidentally buy CN fruit, we will throw it to garbage to avoid health sickness :cool:

On the contrary now I have stopped using any vegitable produce from China, I mostly buy stuff which are grown in Malaysia, Australia or India. If you feel bleached gralic is fine then you should continue eating that, I cannot take that risk over my health.

Nope not a fan of GMO products, not all modified products are bad though, but personally I dont feel any tatse.

am not denying China role toward its upliftment(huge fan), but on my personal scale I hate most of fruits and agri produces from China for the same reason, in the conquest of making big they have adopted unsafe means of making products.
