China Reinforces Leadership in 5G
By Emmanuel Gresset, 08.07.19

China is serious about 5G, as demonstrated at the recent Mobile World Congress in Shanghai.
If anyone thought China’s enthusiasm in 5G was more hype than reality, the Mobile World Congress (MWC) show in Shanghai would have been a wake-up call. The Shanghai show isn’t as big as its Barcelona sibling, but it’s much more representative of mobile directions in Asia, particularly in China and Korea. Exhibitors were showing user equipment (UEs), connectivity from the big players but also from a lot of emerging small-cell providers, lots of Internet of things (IoT) use-cases, also xR (VR/AR/MR) demonstrating immersive streaming to a group for interactive gaming — all of this 5G-based.

Beijing powers up Olympic stadiums with 5G
By Chu Daye Source:Global Times Published: 2019/8/8 22:45:37

The city of Beijing signed a deal with Chinese mobile carrier China Unicom to equip three of its key Olympic venues with 5G wireless technology as China is slated to be the third country in the world to stage a 5G-powered Olympic games.

Beijing State-owned Assets Management Co, which operates the National Stadium, the Beijing National Aquatics Center, and the national speed skating hall, signed a 5G deployment deal with China Unicom on Thursday.

These iconic Chinese Olympic venues have well-known nicknames such as the Bird's Nest and the Water Cube.

Thursday was the 11th anniversary of the opening ceremony of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games.

The two companies will jointly handle work on the building of 5G-powered smart stadiums.

South Korea became the world's first country to host Olympic Games with 5G technology, which was super-fast with ultralow latency, at PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games. Japan is slated to be the second country in the world to host 5G-enabled Olympic Games in 2020.

Wu Xiaonan, vice president of Beijing State-owned Assets Management Co, told the Global Times that 5G is an information highway but at the end of the day it will be the application scenarios that differentiate the Beijing 2022 games.

With 5G infrastructure, the company is now working on developing application scenarios for the eight user groups of the huge sports event.

"For instance, now we are in 4G and you probably have lost your way when you enter a huge, spacious and multilayered building such as the Bird's Nest," Wu told a group of reporters. Many reporters did have difficulty in finding the press room, with their navigation apps failing to give detailed information.

"In the world of 5G, three-dimensional maps and navigation apps will ensure seamless transfer from the outdoor environment to indoor complexes, leading you to your seat within a precision of 1 meter."

China is now in a leading position in the global 5G rollout.

Nearly 20,000 5G base stations have been built in China by the end of June, with 90 percent of these base stations in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, business news portal 21jingji.com reported on Friday.

Beijing has constructed 7,863 5G base stations by the end of July, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen have set up 3,000, 5,000 and 3,777 5G stations by the end of June, respectively, said the news portal, citing public data.

5G not only can download a 10G video in 9 seconds, but also can deeply integrate with industry, transportation and medical care to form the strategic emerging industries such as industrial internet, automatic driving, and telemedicine, Zhu Fusheng, an industry expert, told 21jingji.com.

The well-developed regions have pressing needs to industry transformation and upgrading, Zhu said.

Guangdong, one of China economic powerhouses, enhanced its annual target to build 5G base stations to 32,000 from 20,000 after the country granted 5G licenses for commercial use in June.

China will build 150,000 5G base stations this year, 50 percent higher than expected at the beginning of the year, said the news portal, citing the CCID Consulting.

The cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Shenzhen, Wuhan and Hangzhou, plan to build more than 10,000 5G base stations by the end of this year, according to the CCID Consulting.

The commercial use of 5G is expected to directly bring 10.6 trillion yuan in economic output between 2020 to 2025, and will create 2.9 trillion yuan in value-added economy, 8 million jobs and contribute 6 percent of GDP by 2030, said the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology.

The revenue from network equipment and terminal equipment will reach 450 billion yuan at the 5G commercial use initial stage, the revenue from the terminal equipment will be 140 million yuan at the medium term, and the revenue from service provided by 5G internet companies will hit 2.6 trillion yuan at the middle and later periods, said Liu Duo, president of China Academy of Information and Communications Technology.

However, the cost to build the 5G base station is also high, said 21jingji.com.

As the coverage radius of the 5G base station is about 100-300 meters, that is less than the 4G base station's coverage radius, the 5G base station will be more intensive, said the news portal, citing Liu Peitao, an industry expert.

China had 3.72 million 4G base stations in 2018, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

Calculating based on two time of the 4G base station's number, the country will build at least seven million 5G base stations in the future, said the 21jingji.com.

Moreover, the investment of a 5G base station is about 1.5 to 3 times of a 4G base station, Peng Jian, an expert at CCID Consulting, told the news portal.

China Mobile plans to invest 17.2 billion yuan to operate 30,000 to 50,000 5G base stations to realize 5G commercial use in over 50 Chinese cities by the end of this year.

In addition, China Unicom will invest 6 billion yuan to 8 billion yuan to build 20,000 5G base stations to cover 33 Chinese cities, and China Telecom's investment will be 9 billion yuan to build 20,000 5G base stations in more than 40 Chinese cities this year.

To achieve the same coverage as the 4G network, the investment to build 5G networks will hit 4 trillion yuan, and the electricity consumption will account for more than 40 percent of 5G network operating costs.

The 5G base stations sharing should be increased to avoid repeated construction on 5G base stations to reduce financial waste, Peng Jian said.

Russia is reportedly considering implementing 5G networks with 4.4-4.99 GHz bandwidth, which is used only in China and Japan. Industry insiders say Russia's choice of bandwidth may deepen the cooperation on 5G between China and Russia amid the US crackdown on China's 5G technology.

Russia's Ministry of Telecommunications and Communications proposed considering the 4.4-4.99 GHz bandwidth for the implementation of 5G networks, according to the latest draft plan for 5G technology, the Kommersant newspaper reported on Monday.

The demand for equipment at frequencies of 4.4-4.99 GHz will be low since the frequencies are adopted only by China and Japan, making it possible to build 5G networks mainly with Russia's domestic equipment, said the plan.

Huawei manufactures equipment in the 4.8-4.9 GHz band for China Mobile, the Kommersant report said, citing Dmitry Konarev, a leading expert on Huawei wireless technologies in Russia.

"China can share its experience and provide technology to Russia on the construction of 5G networks," Zhang Hong, a research fellow at the Institute of Russian, Eastern European & Central Asian Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, told the Global Times on Tuesday.

"China and Russia have conducted comprehensive cooperation in many sectors, and there is huge potential in telecommunications and high-tech industry," said Zhang.

Chinese tech giant Huawei will assist MTS, one of Russia's leading internet and mobile providers, in "the pilot launch of 5G networks in 2019 and 2020," said MTS in a statement, RT reported. The two parties signed an agreement when Huawei, the world's biggest telecom equipment supplier, faced a backlash from the US in the wake of the trade war.

"Huawei is moving into the emerging Russian 5G market after the US, UK, Canada and New Zealand banned it from building their 5G networks," said Zhang. "The cooperation between China and Russia is crucial given the background of US unilateralism."

China launched 5G mobile phone services on Thursday, unleashing tremendous opportunities for domestic and foreign companies. Industry representatives said the commercialization of the world's largest 5G market will drive an unprecedented acceleration of industrial growth.

About four months after the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the top regulator of the telecoms sector, issued 5G licenses, the domestic industry is embracing a boom with hopes of growing into a global powerhouse in mobile telecoms.

The ultra-fast speed, low latency and capacity to handle massive amounts of data will help reshape traditional industries, leading to a highly connected society, which is in line with China's ambition to accelerate the development of the digital economy, industry representatives said at a launch event held in Beijing on Thursday.

"The country will accelerate 5G deployment, further integrating the next generation of wireless technologies with industry, and exploring application scenarios in sectors such as manufacturing, transport, energy, agriculture and so on," Chen Zhaoxiong, MIIT vice minister, told attendees at the event, which attracted nearly 400 companies from about 10 countries and regions.

The excitement was palpable as the world's largest telecoms market switched to a 5G model. Domestic and foreign companies applauded the rollout of 5G commercial services, in spite of the nation having fallen slightly behind other 5G leaders such as South Korea and the US.

Analysts drew a stark contrast between China, which is opening its lucrative domestic 5G market to foreign players, and nations like the US that have been politicizing 5G technology in the midst of the US-China trade war. The US has barred Huawei, the world's largest telecoms equipment provider, over unfounded allegations concerning security.

Industry representatives told the Global Times that China will soon sprint ahead of other rivals in the scale of 5G deployment and user number.

"With the official launch of 5G commercial service, market growth will be in full swing," Ding Yun, CEO of Huawei's carrier business group, told the Global Times on Thursday. "It's highly likely that the number of 5G users in China will reach 150 million to 200 million in 2020."

South Korea was the first country to launch 5G commercial services, but China still has the chance to catch up in terms of empowering businesses and industries with the disruptive technology, Ding noted.

Fair market

The official launch of 5G services should also boost the growth of US companies like Qualcomm and Intel, suppliers of 5G chipsets to Chinese 5G smartphone vendors OPPO, vivo and Xiaomi.

"A fully open market with ample competition is a necessity for telecom industry growth," Ding said.

Welcoming foreign rivals is in line with the Chinese government's commitment to build a shared ecosystem, he noted.

The 5G market will account for 1.1 trillion yuan ($166 billion), or 3.2 percent of China's total GDP in 2025, generating 8 million jobs and adding 2.9 trillion yuan in economic value by 2030, according to an EY report, citing data from by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology.

The volume of China's 5G network rollout will create tremendous scale for the entire component industry. More than 1 billion potential 5G users, as well as enterprises and cities, will be connected, Neil Shah, research director of global industry consultancy Counterpoint Research, told the Global Times on Thursday.

This year will be a bit slow as the networks are not fully deployed yet, he noted. "Next year should be a breakout year for 5G as China appears on the world map alongside Korea, the US, UK and other countries in this 5G race," Shah said.

5G is on

Three carriers - China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom - have said they'll offer 5G services starting from Friday in the first batch of 50 cities across the country, with packages as cheap as 128 yuan per month, according to the carriers. Users won't need to change their SIM cards or phone numbers as they upgrade to 5G.

Companies like Huawei, Xiaomi and ZTE have already launched 5G phones.

Global research firm Counterpoint said in a report that 2020 will be a breakout year for 5G smartphone adoption in China, and this trend will likely rekindle smartphone demand.

Considering the market potential, US technology giant Apple is reportedly gearing up for massive shipments of 5G iPhones in 2020.

"Further growth of the 5G market needs collaboration and the world needs China in 5G," Jiang Junmu, an industry observer at Chinese telecom industry news website c114.com.cn, told the Global Times on Thursday.

China's self-developed millimeter wave (MMW) phased array chip will be put into mass production in February with low-cost silicon technology, the chip's research team said. An industry expert said that its low cost will greatly boost popularization of 5G in China and beyond.

Industry experts believe that the technology breakthrough that enables mass production of the 5G MMW phased array chip will effectively launch the product into the global market at a reasonable price and with a better performance.

The chip, unveiled to the public on Sunday, was jointly developed by Chengdu Xphased Technology Co (Xphased), Purple Mountain Laboratories, and a research team from Southeast University in Nanjing, East China's Jiangsu Province.

Zhang Chengjun, general manager of Xphased, told the Global Times on Tuesday that the company has significantly reduced its production cost and made commercialization possible, and mass production of the MMW chips is expected to start on February 1.

"In the past, MMW chips in III-V compound semiconductors were priced at several hundred or even thousands of yuan. Given these high prices, it is basically impossible to commercialize chips," Zhang said.

"The new chip has a much lower price compared with the same kind of chips in the global market, but the quality of the new chip is at world-class levels," he said.

The innovation project involving the MMW chip was initiated in March 2016. After some years of research and development, small-scale trial production began last October, and 50,000 chips were made.

Xphased has already received orders from companies worldwide, including some in France, and it is discussing with companies in the US about future deals regarding phased-array chips and antennas, Zhang said.

The launch of the chip is a late-stage advantage for China's 5G development, Zhao Dixian, a professor at Southeast University, told the Global Times.

"Currently, China is using centimeter-wave frequencies bands for telecommunications. MMW frequencies provide much more bandwidth for mobile communication, and therefore provide faster communication speeds," Zhao said, adding that if a centimeter wave is a single lane, the MMW involves multiple lanes.

However, some believed that although it is an important step toward 5G development, challenges remain.

"The mass production of MMW chips is surely an indispensable part of the popularization of 5G in China, but it's not all," Xiang Ligang, a veteran industry analyst told the Global Times on Tuesday.

"To achieve 5G popularization, other elements such as coding, core networks and software management also need to take place," he said, adding that it will still take some time before the popularization of 5G.
