What should have been and what could have been is different than what is. Caste system is more localized problem and most prevalent in North West India and Pakistan.

One can always pick up texts from obscure Hindu religious texts(like many did before) and prove Hinduism don't support caste system or caste system was merit based in ancient time which has become hereditary by the course of time.

But the reality is way different for both Hindus and Muslims in subcontinent.
