Chennai Floods: Did anyone even hear about it?

Oh yes!!!
@nair was stuck at the Chennai airport last night. All the flights have been cancelled, thousands of people have been moved to temporary shelters and the army has been called in.
A depression in Bay of Bengal has led to heavy rainfall in coastal areas such as Chennai.
Praying for those effected by Chennai floods.

ah... i thought it was only the slums and the lower class areas that had the tankers coming around.

according to [1], the population of madras is 4.8 million... but there are other cities with more population than that ( bangalore, i suppose ) but they don't have the extreme water shortage or flooding problems that madras has... turns out that madras mostly depends on ground water, and from the pictures of the flood, madras is a terribly constructed place.

found this [2], a article from 2012 which speaks of combining storm water drainage and ground water recharge... seems the city corporation did nothing about it.

[2] Can storm water drains help in recharging groundwater? - The case of Chennai, Tamil Nadu

Chennai has a large number of lakes(many salty and marshy) with huge capacities. At least had. It would seem unbelievable for someone outside that even with all that the city has a drinking water problem. The situation is much better now. The ground water table in many areas is extremely salty/affluent and probably won't help much. Add to it the industry wastage that is discharged into lakes damaging the surrounding areas' ground water too. In these areas, it will take years of recharging and flushing to make the water even fit for bath.

I think Chennai's population would be much larger than 5 million if suburbs are included. But thankfully the distribution is spread across the suburbs which are far and wide into adjacent districts.

Thanks for the articles. But I would be happy if the storm water drains at least fulfill their one sole purpose. That is apparently too much of a favor to ask now.

For the long term, the only reliable water source seems to be the sea.

i didn't know about it until evening when i put on aajtak randomly...

I thought you lived in Bangalore?..Bangalore's 3 week chill and rains were due to the Chennai effect...and the heavy rainfalls in Chennai has been telecasted round the clock in local regional news from the last 3 weeks.

All transports to and fro from the south has been effected, hundreds of trains have been cancelled, multiple flights have been cancelled..Hundreds of trucks with relief equipments have departed from Bangalore round the clock..

I guess you are more interested in the shivajinagar variety of sunni news about Modi, Pakistan, beef and ummah.

They made up a temporary airport from a naval base. So flights should be OK soon.

All numbers I have tried have busy lines. Some areas do not have power, so phones might last only as long as power lasts. There are helpline numbers which you can call and find about the situation of any specific area.
Though not able to talk to uncle even now but I called on one helpline number and got info that all cellular as well as landline services are stuck down in majority areas of Chennai. No electricity since day before yesterday evening too.

Yeah, I confirmed. No network anywhere except Western parts. Don't worry. Airtel seems better in more places.

I guess we can expect less anti-Sri Lankan attacks emanating from Tamil Nadu this rainy season as they have more pressing issues to deal with.
