HIGHLIGHTS
  • Chabahar port in Iran, in which India has major investments, is expected to open in a month
  • Afghanistan Consul General said the port will provide impetus to trade between India and Afghanistan
  • It will also provide access to Afghanistan and central Asian countries by-passing Pakistan
NAGPUR: The strategic port of Chabahar in Iran which is being developed to build a transport-and-trade corridor through Afghanistan giving India an access to global markets is expected to be opened in a month's time, said Afghanistan Consul General Mohammad Aman Amin.

"The port is likely to open in a month's time and it will provide impetus to the trade between India and Afghanistan," said Amin here today.

The construction of this port assumes significance as it will allow bypassing the route through Pakistan for accessing markets in Europe and Central Asia and also save on time and cost of doing business. India had in May 2016 signed the historic deal with Iran and Afghanistan.

Amin spoke to media on the sidelines of the inaugural ceremony of 10-day training programme for the officers of the Afghanistan Revenue Department (ARD) at National Academy of Direct Taxes (NADT) in Nagpur.

The programme is an innovative endeavour between NADT and the Embassy of India, Kabul (MEA) as a goodwill gesture and is being organised for the first time.

Amin also hoped that a Mumbai-Kabul flight service will be started very soon.

He said "India and Afghanistan share a historical relationship and India has always helped Afghanistan in its times of trouble. The relations between the two countries have improved in the last two years

This Chabahar port is no match for Gwadar. lol. :disagree:

China needs Gwadar though.
Why should it match? With chabahar...we'll get precious minerals from Afghanistan
and Iran, and export Indian goods through Afghanistan to central asia. Win win for three countries!!
And gives IN a reason to patrol these waters close to Pakistan!!

First we have to see who get's control of Afghanistan. :azn:

It looks like Pakistan and China are going to get most influence in Afghanistan.

We are Afghanistan's neighbors.

Any update on NSTC project?? It got delayed & i think Chabahar port was expected to open 2 months ago.

I view this announcement with a large dose of salt. Ports are notoriously difficult to construct and construction work and upgrades are time consuming. And most of the time 'inauguration' is premature.

Despite all the hoopla about its inauguration last Nov, Gwadar port does not appear to be in a very operational state if this report is to be believed

http://www.dawn.com/news/1243076

The number of operational berths is about 10% of Karachi Port.

Chhabahar port is slightly better as it is much older and in (relatively) more use.

Anyway the worth of a port is ultimately how strategically it is located and how much trade it handles - and whether there are commercially feasible trade routes to begin with. Once again, neither Gwadar nor Chhabahar have any progress to show on this count.

Ironically, if Chabahar was so useful a port with prospects of development and win win situations for Indian Afghanistan and Iran, WHY WOULD IRAN ASK PAKISTAN AND CHINA TO JOIN CPEC
Food for thought

Same reason why Pakistan has asked China for development of Gwadar Port - for funding.
LOL so india is unable to fund cha-cha -bahar this is what you are saying
