NEW DELHI: The Union Home Ministry is preparing a Cabinet note to launch Multipurpose National Identity Cards (MNICs) based on the national register of Indian citizens. Top sources said a draft note has been sent for the approval of Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who is likely to take a final call soon.

“After Home Minister’s comment the final Cabinet note will be prepared which may take a week’s time,” sources said.

An officer privy to the development said each MNIC will cost approximately `35 to the government exchequer. This includes the cost incurred during entire process from registering the citizen, collecting biometrics to delivering the card at the doorstep. He said the MNIC will be the most credible identification document for a citizen and it can be used to receive benefits under social welfare schemes as it would improve e-governance.

The card will be prepared by a central public undertaking and it will carry at least 16 details of an individual and a unique national identity number for each citizen. After delivering the card in the first phase, the Home Ministry will continue working on phase-2 to update the database through the system of registration of births and deaths.

“The entire process would be handled by a central public sector undertaking to make it robust and secure. Home Minister is of the view that the proposed plan will be more reliable, robust and citizen friendly. The Cabinet note will also suggest that entire data generation and enrolment task be given to National Population Register under the Home Ministry,” he said.

Officials informed the Home Minister about a MNIC pilot project, which the Home Ministry had carried out in the select districts of 13 states.

I have already given my fingerprints twice. If they come again I will say good bye and have a good day.

About freaking time.

One ID card that covers:

1- Voter ID
2- PAN card
3- Aadhar card
4- Local passport service (within India as well as by extension of our treaties with Nepal and Bhutan)

I am fed up of keeping track of the dozens of cards we have.

This new ID card should have:

1- The profile, occupation, age and personal details of the holder
2- Biometric scan, fingerprint and retina scan of the holder
3- Date of last departure from India and where.

If we had done it earlier, we could have avoided the bloody pole vaulters in our region.

This is NPR which is being issued under Home Ministry. They will add few elements of ADHAAR and call them their

You missed one thing ...
The ID card should also have ... DNA profile linked. It'll help us to have a comprehensive data base which will help to sole crimes, identify missing persons and can help to solve many parental claims instantently

What about the illegal aliens who manage to get aadhar, ration, passports illegally in West Bengal and Assam?

I believe that is the purpose of this card- only Indian citizens will be eligible as opposed to Indian residents who were eligible for the AADHAAR card.

How does one acertain Indian citizenship?

Cabinet Committee on UAIDAI is already scrapped by modi.

AADHAR is a Failed NO. Failed Number - The Hindu

Initial proposal was to merge AADHAR with NPR even that is unlikely.

Outlines the differences between NPR and AADHAAR and why NPR will be more secure and will ensure these illegals can't get such cards. AADHAAR was not compulsory and all indian residents were eligible- the opposite is true in both cases for the NPR card.
