Why are the cellphones of missing Malaysian Airlines passengers still ringing? Relatives claim that smartphones are still active as the search zone now switches to entirely new area | Mail Online

The 'unprecedented mystery' behind the disappearance of Malaysian Airlines flight MH 370 deepened on Monday when relatives claimed they were able to call the cellphones of their missing loved ones.

According to the Washington Post, family of some of the 239 people on board the vanished Boeing 777 said that they were getting ring tones and could see them as online through a Chinese social networking service called QQ.

One man said that the QQ account of his brother-in-law showed him as active, but frustratingly for those waiting desperately for any news, messages sent have gone unanswered and the calls have not been picked up.

WTF !!!!!

How can cellphones survive a plunge into the ocean ??? how is their signal being received ??
If the plane is in the bottom of the ocean shouldn't all cellphones be dead ?

The next question should be, if the cell phones are ringing why cant the identify the location? when local police is able to identify the location of a cell phone based on signal strength i am sure the agencies working on this case are better equipped.

I doubt the source of this information

The water depth on the site being watched by 30 sats is just 60 meters almost the same length as the 777 itself, though there's zero signs of debris. Thats one shocker and now this one. Is this some kinda bermuda triangle?

Very easily .

It shouldn't take any effort to locate the ringing cell phone.

No, not very easily, not with the conventional method, in order to estimate location of a cellphone in a sector you need to use triangulation method, i doubt there are antennas at the sea, the signal might be picked up by offshore communication antenna, or via satellite, in both cases i dont think it is practical to pinpoint where the signal is coming from.
Tho it is theoretically possible to find the direction of a cellphone signal with an array antenna, i think.

Malaysia jet 'turned back and flew some distance into Malacca Strait': Source

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's military believes the jetliner missing for almost four days turned and flew hundreds of kilometres to the west after it last made contact with civilian air traffic control off the country's east coast, a senior officer told Reuters on Tuesday.

In one of the most baffling mysteries in recent aviation history, a massive search operation for the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777-200ER has so far found no trace of the aircraft or the 239 passengers and crew.

Its not. You can track easily a phone when someone picks it, but tough while ringing.
But its possible, but whether Malaysia wants to track that phone, is to be seen.

Come on man,I doubt the authenticity of this info.

True Bro. I saw it in News channels.

Cell phone reception through land based cell towers or through satellites. Tell me which one can be used by a passenger flying on a 777. Then tell me what are the requirements for cell phone reception. Once you answer these two important questions then we can proceed to find out how true this article is and what Jesus's face looks like on a tortilla.

Bro,In case of land based (cellphone tower) mobile connectivity, If the cellphone has signal reception, you can easily isolate the area in which the cell phone is located.

Anyway, India's newspapers once reported the airbrakes of a Eurofighter Typhoon as the "co-pilot's shield" and the diployement of airbrakes as the "opening of co-pilot's shield as a mark of respect!"
