CEC: Army ready to cooperate with EC

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad on Thursday said the army is ready to cooperate with the Election Commission in as and when necessary.

“It was told on behalf of the army that they’re ready to provide support to the Election Commission as and when required,” he told reporters at the EC secretariat.

The CEC came up with the remarks after a meeting with the top brasses of law-enforcing agencies to finalise strategies to create an election-friendly environment during the country’s 10th parliamentary polls.

Replying to a query, Kazi Rakibuddin said it is yet to be decided when the army will be deployed. “It’ll be decided after a meeting with Returning Officers,” he said.

About holding an inclusive election, the CEC said, “I haven’t yet given up hope of an understanding among political parties. The election will be an inclusive one if they could reach a compromise.”

IGP Hassan Mahmood Khandker, Rab director general Mokhlesur Rahman, top officials of the law-enforcing agencies, representatives from the Armed Forces, were, among others, present at the meeting.

In the wake of the countrywide sporadic violence amid the BNP-led 18-party opposition alliance’s rail-road-waterways blockade programme, the armed forces are likely to be deployed across the country anytime to check violence.

Election Commissioner Brig Gen (retd) Zabed Ali on Tuesday said the army deployment would be prolonged if the situation demands.

Ittefaq Report

Security measures in the Sangsad Bhaban area have been strengthened. The measures will stay until the 10th parliamentary election is held.

Sources at the parliamentary secretariat said security around the area, especially the places open to general public, has been tightened. The purpose is to prevent any untoward incident from happening in one of the most important establishments in the country. Surveillance cameras have been installed at strategic points and all visitors will be subjected to body search upon entering the compound.
