NAYA GAV(AJMER): For all the chest thumping over going cashless, the ground realities at Naya Gav -among the first such villages in the state to celebrate Prime Minister Narendra Modi's dream of a digital future -are a clear indication of how things have gone horribly wrong. On `paper,' this village in Ajmer has become part of the cashless economy, an event that was celebrated with much fanfare on December 17.

Officially, the village has installed five point of sale (PoS) machines and banking apps have been downloaded on smart phones. While everything looks good from the outset, the lesser known fact is that the village does not have much internet connectivity! And to make matters worse, the PoS machines are not functional.

Three weeks after the village `entered' the digital age, villagers have to travel 3km to the town of Harmara, wait in queues at the local bank and ATM to withdraw money for daily use.

"Almost all of us in the village have an ATM card, but we cannot use them.None of the PoS machines are functional and we have to wait in queues at the nearest bank, which is in Harmara, to withdraw cash to buy supplies. Nothing has changed here," said Nandram, a shop owner.

He said that the bank had directed shopkeepers them to open current accounts, following which they were given PoS machines. The village has four grocery shops and a fertilizer shop. The Bank of Baroda provided PoS machines to these shops.

"But they are not functional and we continue to deal in cash. As there is some cash crunch following demonetisation, I also give stuff on credit. The PoS machines have not made any difference," he added.

Villagers said that they require cash to purchase fertilizers and for day-to-day needs. With no change in the requirement of cash, most villagers stand in queued the bank in Harmara to withdraw money.

That's chaiwallas planning. It's like building a house but forgetting to built a toilet. Now when you want to sh!t please go to your chacha's house which is 5 km away.Cool Kat

Ironically , the village still sports large banners declaring that it has become cashless. The village has a population of about 1,600 and 250 houses, with farmers accounting for the majority of the public.

They claim that the bank had also promised to install an ATM in their village on December 17, but nothing has been done. Villagers showed their ATM and RuPay card and said that they were useless because they can't use them. "I have been going to the bank at Harmara for the past three days, but has failed to withdraw any money ," said Rammiya, a daily wage labourer. On a lighter note, he added, "There is no money and, hence, we are a `cashless' village!"

i m sure the "presstitute" media is behind this conspiracy to malign our "dear leader"

What I find even more appaling is the fact that the media is complicit in propagating a cashless society. Who in his sane mind wants any goverment to have 100% control of his/ her life.

We have had different shades of conflicting and sometimes contradicting government policies because of inequities of wealth creation. Successive governments have failed to lift millions from grinding poverty. This has created a chasm between the rich and the poor. It is the poor masses who actually vote in elections and they want more government intervention not less.

Media is equally complicit in promoting government propaganda because they are more interested in ratings and viewership than do in-depth analysis. Right now the tone of general population is that this government is bold and is tackling corruption and black money through this demonetization. There was no discussion of pros and cons of this decision and its long term impact on economy. Government is happy that their coffers are getting full and the banks are flush with money. What will they do with the money?? They will bale out PSU banks who have accumulated close to 6 lakh crore rupees of bad loan portfolios. They are out to reward bad behavior and policies of these PSU banks.

This mindset among the sheeple that their govt. knows what is best for them is the problem. They are not tackling the origins of black money which stems from endemic corruption that is pervasive in all levels of the government both in center and states. Compounded with high taxes and its lax implementation many businesses avoid paying taxes. They grease the palms of the tax officials to only pay minimum taxes or sometimes no tax at all which fuels black money generation and its associated ramifications. This system does not help honest tax payer. There is no way to compete with others in business which is run by companies which resort to unconventional ways to cook the books and to avoid taxes.

I am for no income and corporate taxes and for less government involvement in our daily lives. Only consumption taxes should be allowed and if it implemented properly then there is no need of other taxes.

This is how Modiyapa works. His motto is advertisement, advertisement and more advertisement. He advertises even if he meets his mother and makes a headline out of it. Even his most ardent bhakts are starting to see through his facade, no one is that stupid. They are just too deep in bhakti to speak against dear leader.

Bingo... You got it right

Otherwise you are a Modi baiter...
modi is not a fish that i would go on "baiting" him in a pakistani defence forum.
however, i do try to call a spade a spade. Modi is a human, he has his fair share of advantages and disadvantages.

i kind of admired this guy when i heard his speeches for the first time. then i heard some more....and it seems RG has more variety in his speeches than our PM (i m no RG fan btw, although when i m high, RG is a good source of entertainment). his speeches are loud instead of fiery. his developement in gujarat is commendable but not out of the universe either. and he is definitely not the god he is projected to be. anyhow, he is working hard or hardly working, only time will tell..... which i am ok to give him, considering the alternatives in hand. hope he wont use that time to do the same thing to india what hitler did to germany and zia did to pak.

It's important that people who are not neck down in bhakti speak out. We owe that to the nation. It does not matter where you do it. This forum is well visited in India, so my target audience is Indians, not Pakistanis. Don't give a flying **** about what Pakistanis think of Modi. That's not relevant as far as I am concerned but Indians ought to know how Modi is taking us to a very dark place.

Modi is not smarter than RG, he is just as dumb. He just knows how to project himself better. One unscripted speech and you know his intelligence in 10 mins. Modi is a great politician though, the most conniving I have seen. At this point I think any alternative would be better. Modi is a dangerous combination of a nincompoop and an authoritarian. I would take a nincompoop over him.

its very difficult to know whats going inside one's mind. hence, i cant say for sure whether modi is upto what i actually fear. his bhakts seem to be sure of that. however, i m inclined to dismiss their ignorance aside as they are what they are: trolls.
its very important, as u said, to speak out. but its even more important to speak out impartially. we should not take sides. if modi has done something sinister or at least approved it tacitly we need to shout out. but its equally important to commend his govt on any positive that he initiated.
as i said its too early to gauge his intentions. lets see if he wants to be ram or raavan or a lowly vibhishan.
only time will tell.

Of course, it is important to be impartial. I praised the govt when the surgical strike was first announced. But look what they did after that. Made a mockery of the whole thing and the army in the process by milking every ounce of it for political gain. No govt that I remember in the last 15-20 years would have done that. How do you expect me to praise him for that?

"may the force be with you" --- hugh jackman was like

regarding the surgical strike, i believe it was supposed to be a covert operation, but then it turned out to be a tool for political mileage. of course u cant praise him. u can laugh at our politicians at best. but then his work for GST, what do you think about that ?
