Cancel polls, quit power: Khaleda
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson, Khaleda Zia, on Monday demanded cancellation of the 10th parliamentary polls and handing over power to a non-party neutral government to pave the way for consensus to hold fair and participatory elections.
Khaleda, in a statement, thanked people for ‘boycotting’ the election terming it a ‘scandalous mockery.’
She said, ‘The scandalous mockery of elections on January 5 not demonstrated people’s no-confidence in the government but also proved that free, fair, credible, peaceful and participatory elections would never be held without a non-party neutral government and credible Election Commission.’
The former prime minister said that with holding the ‘mockery in the name of election’ the government lost all sorts of moral and constitutional authority to run the state any more.
She urged people of all tires to move ahead with the opposition’s anti-government protests saying that the government would no longer be able to linger their illegal power.
Khaleda asked the public administrations and law enforcing agencies not to take part in ‘illegal activities’ of the government including killing and repression.
‘You [public administration and law enforcing agencies] should now work for creating a congenial atmosphere in the country, be with the people and give protection to the life, wealth and honour of citizens including minorities,’ she said.
