Russia will stop delivering gas to Europe through Ukraine when the current contract expires in 2019 and redirect transit to the Turkish Stream pipeline, says the Gazprom CEO.

The contract with Ukraine will not be renewed after 2019, Aleksey Miller the boss of Russia’s Gazprom said on Monday at a conference in Berlin, adding that the main reason behind South Stream’s suspension was to keep gas routed through Ukraine.

“It’s not true that the South Stream project has been scrapped because of Gazprom’s unwillingness to observe the rules of the third energy package and European laws. The only aim was to preserve the status quo in the transit via Ukraine. In reality, there was no other reason to block South Stream,” Miller said. He also noted that a single gas price for Gazprom’s European customers will lead to a higher price.

Gazprom could easily double the volume of gas delivered to Europe, but there was no indication European consumers required that capacity, thus those volumes can just go to other markets, such as the Asian market, Miller said.

“Our competitive advantage is that we can pause, if we are forced to. And we can keep it long enough,” Gazprom’s CEO said.

A third of Russian gas delivered to Europe goes through Ukraine. However, Moscow has repeatedly expressed concerns over the reliability of safe gas transit via Ukraine. Gazprom switched Ukraine to a gas prepayment scheme in June due to Kiev’s failure to pay its gas bills. At the beginning of April, Gazprom and Naftogaz of Ukraine signed a new contract for gas deliveries in the second quarter of 2015 with a 25 percent price discount.

In December, Miller announced the construction of the Turkish Stream pipeline to Turkey to replace the South Stream project. Russia scrapped South Stream because of objections from the EU over its construction. The new pipeline will have an annual capacity of 63 billion cubic meters of gas.

Around 14 billion cubic meters of gas will supply Turkey, and the rest pumped to a hub on the Turkish-Greek border for customers in Europe.

Greece and Russia have agreed to cooperate in the Turkish Stream project which might help Greece become one of the main energy distribution centers in Europe.

This will definitely give us geopolitical leverage.

Turkey will also have TANAP with Azerbaijan. We will have energy independence contrary to Europe.

The EU doesn't want to provide membership to Turkey. It's considered too Muslim/Eastern. Good enough for vacations though... LMAO the last time I checked they were becoming more and more reliant on Turkey. How Turkey has grown in economy and stature over the past years. Simply breathtaking. Very good for our Turkish brothers. I hope the Turks can reap the full benefits.

Nobody wants to buy Russian gas any more. Shale and better relations with Iran are necessary to get rid of Putin's influence.

You aren't buying gas from Iran. The Americans are reluctant to improve relations with Iran. I mean those neo-conservative Republicans if you know what I mean. Do you have the ability to upset Israel? If you do, you can buy gas from Iran. Europe is in my opinion 100% stuck with Russian gas.

Europeans dislike the Russians but they dislike Iran even more. You are stuck with Slavo-Turkic gas for a long time. TANAP and Turkish stream is almost finished.

Not true. Anti Iranian stance is mostly due to American//Gulf Arab pressure. Fear of Russia is genuine.

It won't happen immediately but it's not out of the question, especially as the Israel lobby is already losing its influence in the US.

No it won't-the EU sabotaged SouthStream for a reason,to stop Russian dependency.Besides,Turkey is just a transit country just like many other countries out there,if somebody in Ankara thinks that this makes them a great geopolitical [player they're in for a surprise.

Nice to see @atatwolf believing an RT article clearly meant just to stroke some egos. Also nice to see Turkey believing that they'll keep "the keys to Europe" ,given to them by the Russians.

Turkey won't just deliver Russian gas to Europe from 2019 on. We will also deliver Azeri, Iraqi and in the future Turkmeni, and Kazakh energy to Europe. All roads lead to (new) Rome.

Nothing "leads" there,it just passes "through" there, lol. It's called a transit country not a Gordian geopolitical knot. It's not like it's Turkish gas,you just have a pipeline running through the country.Everything leads to Europe because there are the money that everybody wants for that gas.

Care to check what happened with shale dream in EU?One big nothing-discovered reserves are not worth investing.Company after company stopped their shale projects.Care also to point who is your "nobody"?Like orders from Brussels to stop any projects with Gazprom maybe?Intentionally sabotaging South Stream and threating countries involved(like my country) to also sabotaged it -again by order of your"nobody" from Brussels.Or maybe new orders(enacted specially against Russia) to receive OK before signing any major gas deals again by your "nobody" from Brussels. So who is your "nobody" ?A group of criminals in Brussels working under USA orders. And in case you missed (you miss quite of lot not fitting your reality)-EU "energy security"(understand USA has the right to say who will sell gas/oil to EU) is USA national priority.
Like it or not for next few decades there is no alternatives for Russian gas for EU(so-called USA LNG is just one big joke).Iranian,Azeri/Turkmenistan gas etc is not enough to satisfy all EU needs which will keep becoming bigger and bigger. All routes will pass Turkey and EU will need to talk with Turkey and also build this time at its expenses pipeline from Turkish border.

Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan have one of the biggest energy sources in the world. It is more than enough until new methods of sustainable energy get invented.

If you like it or not you will use Turkish stream and TANAP that uses Turkic energy.
