Is this radical step of banning burqa outright justified?

Emergency law will take effect eight days after more than 250 killed in series of blasts

Muslim women have been banned from wearing face veils under an emergency law passed by Sri Lanka's president, days after more than 250 people were killed in series of bombings in the country's capital Colombo.

Maithripala Sirisena's office said any garment or item which obstructs the identification of a persons face would be barred.

The move follows recent cabinet discussions on face coverings. The government had said it would delay a decision until talks with Islamic clerics could be held, on the advice of prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

A week after the attack on Easter Sunday, the country's Catholic churches remained closed because of security fears.

However, Mr Sirisena and Mr Wickremesinghe attended a televised Mass at the residence of Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, the archbishop of Colombo.

“This is a time our hearts are tested by the great destruction that took place last Sunday,” Mr Ranjith told those watching across the nation. “This is a time questions such as, does God truly love us, does he have compassion towards us, can arise in human hearts.”

Police said they had arrested 48 suspects over the last 24 hours as checkpoints were mounted by all of Sri Lanka’s security forces across the country.

Among those detained were two men whom authorities recently appealed to the public to locate.

Tensions have been running high on the island over the past week, with fears of further attacks as well as dread over possible retaliation against Sri Lanka’s Muslims.

Police entered the main mosque of National Towheed Jamaat (NTJ) in Kattankudy on Sunday afternoon, just a day after authorities declared that it was a terror group.
Authorities have banned NTJ over its ties to Mohammed Zahran, the alleged mastermind of the attacks which also left hundreds wounded.

Zahran and others wearing masks, had pledged their loyalty to Isis leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi before carrying out the attacks.

Later, an officer dispersed journalists waiting outside, saying authorities were conducting a “cordon and search operation.”

Police then left, locking up the mosque just before afternoon prayers were to start.

Earlier this week a Sri Lankan parliamentarian proposed a ban on women wearing the burqa.

Ashu Marasinghe submitted a motion to parliament stating that the garment, which covers the whole body and the face, was “not a traditional Muslim attire” and should be outlawed on security grounds.

On Friday night, a confrontation with police sparked a firefight with militants in Kalmunai. Sri Lanka’s military said the gunfire and later suicide blasts killed 15 people, including six children.

Isis clater laimed three of the militants who blew themselves up there, identifying the bombers by their noms du guerre as Abu Hammad, Abu Sufyan and Abu al-Qa’qa.

Police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara confirmed a woman and a four-year-old child found wounded after the gunbattle have been identified as Zahran’s wife and daughter.

The Isis-aligned militants had created a bomb-making factory at the home. Bags of fertiliser, gunpowder and small ball bearings filled boxes. Police found fuels used to make the fire of the blast more lethal.

This is outrageous.

Initially I thought they were only mulling it over. But directly banning even the burqa (not just niqab) is just ridiculous and shows Sri Lanka wishes to join the war on Islam instead of the war on terror (or was there a difference).

They have even shut down mosques for the matter.

May Allah SWT provide strength and mercy to Muslims in SL who are now in a state of siege.

Look at jubilant Tarek here.

Abe control your emotion dhoti aur lungi bhi ban karwaraha hai.. ab kya log bahar dharidar nade walle kache mein mere raja babu aagye, mere raja babu aagaye kehte hue goomenge kya...

I support this decision. We in Pakistan suffered also due to same issue (misuse of burqa by terorrists) , suicide bomber ladies in burqas blowing themself. We still remember the dozen suicide attacks in which womens were used, similarly the Police academy attack..... women played major role in that attack 2-3 suicide bombers were ladies. They are not banning burqa but banning the covering of face which is acceptable. You can still cover your head and hand and feet.

I have a research publication on the topic from 2011. i am going to share the ttile and header. Do search it and read. Actually, just read this first page and decide for yourself.

Ah come on...there is evidence which confirms attackers were Muslims and sympathetic to ISIS.

Heck there is a video of these pigs they themselves published!

Salaam

Pakistan got through the decade of terror without banning either the Burka or the hijab or beard.

Most people supporting it were just looking for an excuse to do it. The people responsible for the security lapse are just scapegoating muslim women here.

From the CCTV footage i've seen - all the terrorists were wearing western clothes.

Sri Lanka failed to act on Indian intelligence and is now looking to marginalise a minority of Muslim women in Sri Lanka to be shown to be doing something.

All around the world the law regarding Burka should be simple - wear what you like but you are mandated to identify yourself at security checkpoints, even if they are in public.

.
for the sake of security such ban is essential to save lives. as it can be used to conceal large amount of explosives or firearms but as seen from footage that the terrorists had modern attire as well so someone shouldn't be judged purely on outlook and everyone should be scrutinized

I just want to point out that in our own Pakistan, Pasthons have faced racism and harassment by people of Punjab and the law enforcement authorities in Punjab purely due to their ethnicity so be mindful before you judge other countries

They have banned every face cover that would hinder identification of people. That includes black helmets as well.

True all the bombers were in modern garments and none of them were Burka clad women. But burkha clad women has been used to transport explosives. Also they can't be identified in a CCTV recording.

Sri Lanka gives TOO much emphasize to religion. This must stop. This is a country with significant populations of all the major faiths in the world and we need to reduce the level of religiosity of every section in the country including Buddhists.
