I have no idea about the said incident but having citizens detaining people is slippery slope even if no violence was used. Trust me I understand your and other people's impulse about not having "others" around them. This impulse no doubt drove those people in Bulgaria to take citizens action presumably based on the ethnic profile of the persons detained. That is not a healthy road to go down.
What we must understand or rather the thinking people must understand is that we are moving toward to globalized world. This process really took off about 500 years ago although purists would argue that this process began from day one of the human story. After all humans emerged out of Africa and moved all over the globe. So migration is nothing new really. In recent times the the mass vacuaming of Europe to the Americas, Antipodes, Cape etc including the transplantation of Africa to Americas in the form of slavery to the virtual draining out of European Jewry to Middle East or the "orient" as you call it.
So modern migration has to be seen in the bigger picture. One of the abiding characteristics of humans is to capture the reality around them and regard that as a
constant. Average person rarely thinks beyond their own times and their existential horizon. This migration thing will continue in one form or another. In fact I forecast a massive migration wave within next two decades plus from
Sub Saharan Africa. The population explosion in the orient is now begining to slow down. The biggest future growth will be in
SSA. Markus may not like to hear this but Italy will in the future get hit by human ripple from Africa.
Migration or the drivers behind it are largely down to demographics and geopolitics. All societies go through this population model.
Europe went through stage
2 and
3 between 1700-1900 and huge amounts of the surplus populations migrated to the Americas (including from Italy as we all know Hollywood's Mafia infatuation) and in the case of Russia east into Asiatic lands east of Rus eventually spilling into Kamchatka peninsula and the Caucasus/Central Asia.
From 1940s onwards Asia has seen stage 2 and now 3. There are signs of pre-entry to stage 4. So expect migration to start abating over the next two decades. However that slack will be taken over by Sub Sahara Africa as it hits Stage 2 and is seeing population explode.
What's even more important though is how large parts of the world are catching up in economic terms. This means increasing demand for finite resources which is why importance of Saudia Arabia is not about to go away any time soon. This can be seen in the tight embrace of that country by USA.
What however is evident is that in this globalized world those countries which have maximum international linkages like USA and UK will do well. Bottom line is we all are going to have to live in a interconnected world. In a sense the extreme right wing in Europe and Islamists like Al Qaeda are the two sides of the same coin. Both are reactions to increasing globalization. The Islamists just do not want to have anything to do with outsiders., They just want their little Islamdoms where they can rule and do oblivious of what rest of world thinks. They don't want world givinbg them grief in their own little caliphates. Taliban in Afghanistan are one example. Al Qaeda was largely articulated on US presence in Saudia Arabia. Bin Laden bitterly oppposed any external military being allowed into KSA.
I believe your in London. Have a look at it. Welcome to global city. Much as people might complain but London is where the heartbeat of the world is felt. With it comes incredible economic power and gravitas. This is reflected on even larger scale in USA which truely is a composite of the world. In it lies problems but also greatness.
@Akheilos Is nice intelligent lady and I am sure she is not apologist for any rapists of any background.
