SIALKOT: Indian Border Security Forces (BSF) personnel resorted to unprovoked firing along the Working Boundary in Sialkot's Zafarwal and Shakargarh sectors on Monday, according to an Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement.

A Chenab Rangers man and a civilian sustained injuries in the firing, sources in the Chenab Rangers told Dawn.

Sources also said that Indian Border Security Force (BSF) personnel, who were stationed at the Karole Karishna and Pansar posts in India, targeted Thakar pur and Karole posts on the Pakistani side.

Pakistani forces responded with retaliatory firing.

The exchange of fire continued until the filing of this report. Indian troops have reportedly suffered heavy losses.

Fear and panic gripped the area after the incident.

According to a report published on The Times of India, Pakistani Rangers violated ceasefire again by targeting border posts in Kathua and Samba sectors, drawing retaliation from BSF.

"Pakistani Rangers resorted to ceasefire violation and opened small arms firing in one post in Samba district and two areas in Kathua district late last night," The TOI quoted officials as saying.

In December last year, the two countries had pledged to uphold the 2003 ceasefire accord which was left in tatters by repeated violations that year. The truce breaches had put the nascent bilateral peace dialogue on hold.

The Himalayan territory of Kashmir, which is the main contention, between the two countries, is divided between India and Pakistan by the UN-monitored de facto border of Line of Control (LoC). The territory is claimed in full by both the countries.

Ceasefire violation: Woman killed, four injured as India continues firing in Shakargarh

ISLAMABAD:
A woman has been killed and four others were injured as India’s Border Security Forces (BSF) unleashed on Monday a barrage of gunfire and mortar shelling at Shakargarh sector of the Sialkot working boundary, Express News reported.

Chenab Rangers responded befittingly to the firing. Reports suggest the exchange of gunfire is still going on.

The recent spate of attack comes after heavy and unprovoked shelling by BSF killed a teenage girl and injured a minor in Zafarwal and Shakargarh sectors along the Sialkot Working Boundary Saturday morning.

The BSF fired several mortar shells on Chak Nehala village in Zafarwal sector. A 16-year-old girl, Sumera Bibi, d/o Manzur Ahmed, was hit by shrapnel and died on the spot. In Chak Bheka village, in Shakargarh sector, an eight-year-old child, Mursileen, s/o Muhammad Aslam, was critically injured when mortar shells fired by the BSF slammed into a house. He was admitted to the CMH Sialkot, where his condition was stated to be critical.

Further, senior officials of the Chenab Rangers said Indian troops targeted the civilian population in the border villages in Shakargarh sector particularly Bhoray Chak, Sukho Chak, Chekay Chak, Chitar, Sukhmal, Tarapura and Abial Dogar on New Year’s Eve. The Chenab Rangers retaliated effectively and made the Indian guns silent, they said.

Earlier, on December 31, two Pakistani paramilitary soldiers were killed in cross-border firing with Indian border guards near the Sialkot working boundary spurring a strong protest from Islamabad.
