Canada is part of the Commonwealth, yes, but USA are the colonies that dared dream bigger than their masters. The rest, as they say, is history.

That was the year people elected someone largely based off of skin color than on the ability to lead (including me). Just another form of Idiocy in power.

We are like a mother to them(though the child has now outgrown the mother, however a child will always be his mothers child even when he's an adult and is bigger than her.), they still speak our language and learned/copied alot from us(divide and rule etc).
Anyway the lesson here for Asians is that brutal wars have been fought between us, but at the end we still made up and are now strong allies/partners. So stop the whinning in Asia and look forward instead of always crying about the past.

Yeah, I can recall that election, going to the polls and hearing a neighbor enthuse repeatedly while waiting to vote that "It's so HISTORIC!" Didn't need to ask who she was voting for. Lost her job (we worked at the same place) due to layoffs a year or so later, wonder if she's rethought it...

It's borderline illegal in the US, you are not allowed to "campaign" or advocate for any candidate at the polling site, must be off the site itself. Wasn't _quite_ campaigning, but about as close as you could get without shouting "Vote for ____!"

For non-Americans, where I live, the convention is you get a sample ballot in the mail, figure out how you want to vote (typically 20-30 things you'll vote on, mostly people for offices, couple proposition issues sometimes). On the day, you show up and wait for a chance to use the voting machines. Everyone waits quietly in line, no pushing or shoving, and no talking about the election itself (little conversation at all). Voting takes maybe 5 minutes, less if you're well organized, more if you don't read so fast or have vision issues. You turn in your voting card (memory device) the election person swipes it through the machine, you get a little "I voted!" sticker, and leave. We use one of the local fire stations - they pull the engines out into the parking lot to make room. November is pretty cool around here, sometimes below freezing in the morning, so you need to wear a moderately heavy jacket for the wait. Wait typically is around 15-20 minutes in my neighborhood. They have a big logbook of all the registered voters in that our district (maybe 4000 people?) - they find your name, you sign next to it, they counter-sign, you get a card and vote.

No. It is called the White House after it was repainted in white to hide the black soot and scorch marks from when the British set it alight. The name itself commemorates this history of both the building and the young country at that time.
