Brazil now has a Lebanese president, Lebanon still doesn’t

Michel Temer's parents immigrated to Brazil from Lebanon
As Brazil’s President Dilma Rousseff faces trial following impeachment and suspension by the senate, Vice-President Michel Temer will now assume the role of president for the time being.

Although Temer was born in Brazil, his parents emigrated from the village of Btaaboura in Lebanon. He takes on the role of president amidst a massive economic recession and as numerous politicians face corruption charges even more serious than those plaguing Rousseff.

Temer holds a doctorate from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo and formerly served as state prosecutor and as state secretary for public security. Starting in 1987, he served six consecutive terms in Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies.

He went on to become the chairman of the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party, which allied with Rousseff’s Workers’ party in 2007. This eventually lead to Temer’s selection as Rousseff’s vice-president when she took office in 2011.

Rousseff’s trial could take up to 180 days, meaning Temer will likely be presiding over the country during the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, starting on August 5.

Of course, Lebanese were quick to point out the irony of the situation…

Instagram tweets do not display on PDF somehow so click on the link to read the remaining part of the article.

In other news there are some 30 (some sources put an even higher number) million Latin Americans of Arab origin (one of the largest ethnic groups in Latin America) and they are also one of the most successful groups of people. Several Latin American presidents and prime ministers have been of Arab origin.

https://ngcco.wordpress.com/2013/03...-america-has-had-8-presidents-of-arab-origin/

In Brazil there are around 10-15 million Arab-Brazilians alone.

The second richest man (Carlos Slim Helú) in the world is an Arab-Mexican too.

Other well-known Latin Americans of Arab origin are Shakira and Salma Hayek to name a few.

Anyway it's a hilarious situation and more than anything very telling of the political chaos in Lebanon.

Ralph Nader who ran for US presidency quite several times too was lebanese descent , Steve Jobs father was a syrian refugee too

.
Checking out wiki, it seems his parents immigrated to Brazil in the 1920s. I think after 100 years, we should consider Mr Temer more Brazilian than Lebanese.

What's your point here exactly? Who denies the fact that he is a Brazilian citizen? So a citizen of say Finland born to Iranian immigrant parents, ceases to have any ties to Iran and is not considered a person of Iranian origin anymore? This guy, for all we know, might be a Lebanese citizen.

However both of his parents were Lebanese migrants hence he is one out of almost 15 million Arab-Brazilians.

Anyway this news should be seen as somewhat of a comedy (which the Lebanese also have judging by the reactions on social media) as Lebanon has been without a president for 2 years while Temer has now become the Brazilian president.

In which case the title here is flawed.

The Gent is of Lebanese origin but not a Lebanese.

You obviously don't get the gist of this article and the reactions of the Lebanese on social media (see the linked article) and in such a case I cannot help you.

Is the current Brazilian president a Brazilian citizen? Oh, really? Who would have known? What a shock!

The point flew over your heads, it seems.

@Halimi @Falcon29 (an example of what you wrote about yesterday).

Where in my post did I mention the article ?

It was the title which I felt was misleading & that's what I said.

Did I ask you to help me ?

It's not a misleading title genius as he is of Lebanese origin. There is something called Lebanese people and he is part of that people irrespective of his nationality. Lebanese people can be citizens of Lebanon and dozens of other countries. Nowhere in the title does it say that a LEBANESE CITIZEN has become the president of Brazil.

Nationality is just a piece of paper. A Lebanese person (a person of Lebanese origin) in say Brazil does not cease to be a Lebanese just because he has Brazilian nationality. He could be a citizen of 100's of different countries in theory yet his origin will remain the same.

No, but you seem in need of help. Not sure why I am wasting my time on hugely ignorant people who do not even know the basics. Stop wasting my time and polluting my threads with ignorant comments. Find another playground.

The title is supposed to be humorous, as in Lebanon the country doesnt have a president but other countries have Lebanese presidents. Yes factually he is not Lebanese but for the sake of humor facts can be twisted slightly.

Nothing to celebrate for an imposed ex informant for the US, typical trait of middle eastern politicians..I fear what will become of Brasil in the next few month!
