China today said the border dispute with India has been "contained" and the Indian elephant and Chinese dragon should "do more" to strengthen the bilateral cooperation to facilitate its settlement.

Addressing his annual press conference on the sidelines of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's legislature, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said a warm welcome awaited Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he makes his first visit to China later this year.

"Last September, President Xi Jinping made an historic visit to India. Picture of the two leaders working at a spinning wheel in Gujarat, the home state of Prime Minister, has spread far and wide in China," Wang said in response to a question from PTI about the India-China relations at a nationally-televised crowded press conference.

"Chinese people believe in reciprocating the courtesy of others. I am sure when Prime Minister Modi visits China later this year, he will be warmly welcomed by the Chinese government and people," he said.

Terming the "China-India boundary question, a legacy of history", Wang said: "We have worked on it for many years and made some progress in the boundary negotiations.

"The dispute has been contained. At the moment, the boundary negotiations is in the process of building up small positive developments. It is like climbing a mountain and the going is tough because we are on the way up."

"This is all the more reason that we do more to strengthen China-India cooperation so that we can enable and facilitate the settlement of the boundary question," he said.

Invoking one of China's erstwhile top leaders, Deng Xiaoping who said that unless India and China are developed, there will be no Asian century, Wang said: "China is prepared to work with India to implement important agreements reached by our leaders."

"Chinese dragon and Indian elephant should join in a duet to work for the early revitalisation of two ancient civilisations, common prosperity of the two emerging markets and amicable co-existence of two large neighbours," he said.

Modi is expected to visit China before May 6, around the time when his government completes one year in office.

China says progress being made on border talks
Progress is being made on drawn-out border talks with India, China's foreign minister said on Sunday, likening the process to climbing a mountain that becomes harder the closer to the summit you get.

The neighbouring giants have had numerous rounds of talks over the years without making much apparent process, in a dispute which dates back to a brief border war in 1962. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi described the problem as one "left over from history".

"After many years of hard efforts, the border talks continue to make progress, and the dispute has been brought under control," Wang told reporters on the sidelines of China's annual meeting of parliament.

"At the moment, the boundary negotiation is in the process of building up small and positive developments," he said. "It's like climbing a mountain: the going is tough, and that is only because we are on the way up."

China lodged an official protest last month when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited one of the border regions in dispute.

China claims the northeast Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, calling it south Tibet. Its historic town Tawang, a key site for Tibetan Buddhism, was briefly occupied by Chinese forces during the 1962 war.

Chinese President Xi Jinping's largely successful trip to India last year was overshadowed by a stand-off between Chinese and Indian troops in Ladakh, another disputed area.

Still, the nuclear-armed neighbours have been trying to move past the issue and concentrate on their broader relationship, which has deep historical roots. Modi is expected to visit China this year.

Wang said he hoped the two countries were able to peacefully coexist so that the "dragon and elephant can dance together".

Empty talks.
How so?

If they succeed and these two asian giants foster warmer ties can you imagine the amount of good for their respective citizens these two nations could do together?

One way or another this dispute needs to be resolved in a peaceful manner, this isn't the LoC/Pakistan mess.

It's been sounded for few months now. Some sort of proposal already discussed in detail. Looks like China would agree for pre 1962 border and so acknowledgement of Mac Mohans line. So China have to give in to solve this problem. Very cleverly India already set the ball rolling when it announced a land transfer plan to stop infiltration from Bangladesh. Even India have to give more land we are ready for peace. Was the message sent to the Chinese. But in return India would lower its tone on problems faced by China in SCS . So miracle may happen for the best intrest of to largest population of the world . Prosperity and new found target for more trade will easy out lots of border problem when slowing Chinese economy needs Lil push from India for new trades .

I do want that but i Chinese are deceptive in nature so unless there is a solid work on ground this is all empty talks.Make it IB and i will be the happiest person in India.

What does 'contained' mean ?

Illogical statement by the Chinese and foolishly covered by Indian media as if some progress is made or imminent.
