“Problems can’t be resolved by bowing down heads,” she said without mentioning the name of the incumbent Awami League government.

The BNP chief made the scathing remarks at a huge public meeting at Ghagutia Chala Bazar ground in the afternoon.

Referring to her recent meeting with Indian Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in Dhaka, Khaleda said Pranab told her that they want to build up relations with people here, not with any particular party.

She said the Indian Finance Minster made the remarks as he understands that people are the source of power.

Khaleda said Awami League had thought that they have a last shelter (in India), but they are now losing that.

The BNP chief said now every country wants to establish good relations with people. “Relations could be good with a party if it has good relations with people.”

About the government’s ‘repression’ on its political opponents,
Khaleda said the government has formed a special force to harass efficient organisers of BNP and its popular leaders by filing “false” cases or making them disappeared.

The BNP chairperson alleged that the special force was formed by AL terrorists, intelligence agencies, police, RAB, Jubo League and Chhatra League cadres.

She said already many leaders, including Ilias Ali, had been the victims of enforced disappearance.

Khaleda asked those involved in such activities, particularly Rab to refrain from carrying out illegal orders of the government. “Otherwise,” she warned, “everybody will have to face trial under the law of the land. No government is the last government and days of this government are numbered.”

She said people will swoop on those involved in heinous activities of killing and kidnapping.

On the caretaker government issue, she categorically said the next general election will definitely be held under non-party neutral government.

She reiterated people would not allow holding the next general election under the AL government.

Khaleda asserted that the elections must be neutral so that people’s opinion could be reflected through ballots. She said they want a change to return to power through elections to maintain the trend of democracy in the country.

About the AL’s criticisms against Prof. Yunus, she said they cannot respect the honorable personalities of the country.

Khaleda said they (AL) also could not respect late AL leader Tajuddin Ahmed and his family either.

About Tajuddin’s son, she said Sohel Taj has resigned in protest against the government’s “misdeeds and corruption.”

Khaleda also referred to Sohel Taj’s comments that all things cannot be unveiled now as those would expose the government’s misdeeds.

The BNP chief said former Railways Minister Suranjit Sengupta has been made minister without portfolio because of the fear that Sengupta might expose the government’s corruption.

Khaleda said if her party comes to power they will put an end to enforced disappearance, killings and terrorism. “We have stopped militancy,” she said, adding that incidents of bomb attacks in the country started during the rule of the last Awami League government.”

She claimed that it is BNP that curbed militancy. “Awami League did nothing in this regard.”

Turning to the killing of journalist couple Sagar Sarwar and Meherun Runi, the BNP Chairperson said they had secrete information about corruption, particularly about the head of the government and her family members. “They were killed lest the secret information are made public,” she said.

Khaleda alleged all the material evidence were destroyed after the killing and the killers sent abroad.

About corruption in the Padma Bridge project, the former Prime Minister said the World Bank suspended funding to the bridge after it found evidence of corruption by the government and the prime minister’s family. “The IDB and Jica also stopped funding.”

Referring to her recent meeting with the Japanese Deputy Prime Minister in Dhaka, she said he told her that they would not give money.

The BNP Chairperson said if they get back to power, they would construct two Padma bridges.

Terming the Awami government ‘corrupt, killer, terrorist and traitor’, she said there had been no development in the country under this government and there will be no development work the future either.

Chaired by Kapasia thana BNP president Khaliur Rahman, the meeting was also addressed by Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Brig Gen (retd) Hannan Shah, Mirza Abbas, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Altaf Hossain Chowdhury, Prof MA Mannan, Shamsuzzman Dudu, Amanullah Aman, Fazlul Hoq Milon, Khairul Kabir Khokon, Abdus Salam, Moazzem Hossain Alal, Shirin Sultana, Habibun Nabi Khan Sohel and Sultan Salahuddin Tuku.
