BNP chief Khaleda Zia attacked during city election campaign in Dhaka

Where was the army when Hefazote brought out a million men demonstration? Besides, as far as I know the BNP leaders do not want to see the army come to power and that's the problem with BNP.

BNP has a legitimate cause and whatever is legitimate is moral. BNP cannot possibly sell itself for the buyers already have a faithful slave in AL.

I can assure you that is not the case, the whole objective of the past 'andolon' was to bring the army to power, I am quite close to Khaleda Zia and the top tier BNP leaders. Hefazot is not something that the people of Bangladesh look up to or supported, nor were there demands just, your argument fails.

This is the most dangerous weakness of Khaleda, she is surrounded by backstabbers like you.

Just how many people support AL today, but they are in power, aren't they? So, people's support at this point is quite irrelevant, it is relevant in a democratic country. As for what is just and what is not, I wouldn't take it from a backstabber.

So, what was the objective of the so called 'andolon'? The failure of this andolon completely demoralized the BNP and not to mention the resources and man power wasted . The BNP was warned about not doing this andolon prior without any complete plan, it was highly disorganized and lacked any objective besides bringing the army down. You are talking emotionally or simply like a third level BNP activist, I have no time for third level Indian dalal like yourself.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has been attacked while campaigning for party-endorsed city election candidates in Dhaka.

Her party blamed the attack on the government and called a countrywide shutdown for Wednesday.

However, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina dubbed the incident a “drama” staged by her main political adversary.

Khaleda came under attack around 6pm on Monday at Karwan Bazar where she was addressing a roadside rally, witnesses said.

The former prime minister was halfway into her electoral pitch when slogans deriding her were shouted. “Chhi Chhi [Shame on you] Khaleda” reverberated from the kitchen market.

She was leaning out from the car through an open door and speaking to the crowd using a loud hailer in front of the Karupalli Bhaban.

She rushed through the remainder of her speech and the attack started immediately after she ended at 6pm, according to time stamps on photos taken by bdnews24.com photographer Asif Mahmud Ove.

Khaleda urged the voters to elect party-endorsed Dhaka North mayor candidate Tabith Awal for a “clean city”.

Witnesses said that objects and brickbats were hurled at the gathering from the buildings nearby in the first bout of attacks.

Khaleda ducked into the car and her motorcade started moving out towards Bangladesh Film Development Corporation.

A group of unidentified miscreants wielding sticks, logs and sledgehammers launched the attack.

The BNP chief’s security staff managed to get her out of the area unharmed but the vehicle she was on was damaged along with almost all the others in the motorcade, bdnews24.com Chief Political Correspondent Sumon Mahmud said.

Several of her security staff and journalists covering the event were injured. Many of them were seen bleeding from head wounds.

Her security affairs adviser Maj Gen (retd) Fazle Elahi Akbar claimed shots were fired at the BNP chief’s vehicle.

But the claim could not be verified independently.

Khaleda went to Shahjahanpur after the attack and campaigned for BNP-backed Dhaka South mayor contender Mirza Abbas.

A police officer on duty at the scene told TV reporters that they could not identify or detain any of the attackers.

BNP’s Standing Committee Member Moudud Ahmed alleged the Bangladesh Chhatra League activists spearheaded the attack aided by police.

“This was a planned attack to eliminate the BNP chairperson,” he claimed.

Khaleda boycotted 2014 general elections but endorsed candidates for the Apr 28 city polls.

She introduced her party-backed Dhaka mayor candidates at a function on Apr 14. She urged voters to stage a ‘silent revolution’ and make her party-endorsed candidates win the polls.

On Monday, police deployed at her house were withdrawn as she currently holds no post that entitles her to police protection.

Hasina had urged people to question Khaleda, wherever she went to campaign, over the violence during the anti-government movement.

The BNP chief hit the campaign trail on Saturday. A day later, ruling Awami League activists obstructed her campaign in Uttara.

@T-Rex @aazidane

Khaleda and Hasina both don't want the Military to come to power, after seeing what happened last time. The people are done with both, neither can bring people to their side as effectively as before. Back then Zia and Mujib relations could help one of the Begums come to power not anymore. Most people are done with this Independence crap. Jamaat and its alies has better and more loyal support, as they can claim that they represent the Muslims of Bangladesh and it is growing stronger.

I agree with @aazidane that Khaleda could bring the Indian stuff and there are quite a lot but both Begums again fear that if Army comes to power, then India might shelter them or stand up to their side. Thus she is too afraid to bad mouth India. No matter how many pro-Indian officers Hasina employ, the Army will always be anti-Indian and also our Army wants to cozy up to the Chinese and buy some of their equipments to modernize the Army and they know that if we have a pro-Indian government, they can't get those weapons.

Both of them also have legitimate reasons to hate the Army as well, as one's father and the other's husband was killed by an Army Coup.

That's why you will see that there is an arrest warrant against Khaleda and nothing else, both wants power but neither wants the Army to come to power or anyone else in the process.

The Army and Jamaat have more in common than with the other 2 party and thus to stop both of them working together the government creates all this farce "anti-war tribunal" and "hanging of war criminals".

The JeI is a non issue in 2015 in the greater scheme of things, they do not have the support of the mass. The awami league's plan B was to hand over to the army before getting toppled, if the BNP could have toppled them that is. The reason is, it gives the AL leaders time to flee the country. The top brass of the army has been carefully screened by the RAW and India, and very close to India. The is why the BNP never antagonized India. The BNP's only objective during the andolon was to get the army involved and appease India along the way.

The one's who were most successful during the recent blockade was Jamaat. BNP wanted Army involved so that they could go cry to UN and say that the Government is using Military force to diminish protests and thus put sanctions on Bangladesh. And use those sanctions to make the people anti-government and overthrow Hasina. Khaleda too doesn't want Military in power, both learned their lesson in 2007.

No one wants the military in power, military always is the last resort and BNP has more to gain than the AL from a military intervention thus the BNP wanted a military intervention. The west certainly did want a military intervention, but the Indians didn't want it. If the military did intervene the west could have influenced the military...

Not this time, even if the Military stay in power for 2 more years, the Begums can't come back, both are getting old and their sons aren't that well known or popular in politics. Tariq Zia might be more known than Hasina's son but he has too many faults to lead a revolution against the Army.

You are wrong, the begums are the people's choice, you can't do anything to them; they are wired in the hearts and minds of the people and they are the symbol of democracy to the outside world, military only symbolizes fascism and dictatorship. If you put them in jail, their popularity will only rise. The military will have no other option but to hold a free, fair and credible elections as the west will have more pull within the military. Not to forget that a military run nation can't participate in the UN missions.

Okay, now you are sounding crazy, the people in Bangladesh are growing tired by them, more and more people feel that they only care about being in power. And their whining about what their father and husband did for Independence is now not something to get re-elected.

Thats your personal opinion, people in general do not like change. The BNP has around 35% of Bangladesh and the AL has around 35%, the rest are lets say; neutral. If you talk about BNP, Khaleda is the face and if you talk about the AL, Hasina is the face. Have you seen how many people khaleda pulls in her meetings outside Dhaka? The people of Bangladesh are highly emotional and uneducated to know any better, the dynastic politics is here to stay for a long time, even Thailand couldnt overcome this, the Gandhis still own the Congress, and Pakistan has the Bhuttos. Most importantly, the dynastic politics is here to stay is because a party takes years and millions to form, the elites support either the BNP or AL, every party needs the backing of the elites. A third force was tried during the 1/11 tenure, the people of Bangladesh simply rejected it.

As far as I know and I have followed his posts, @aazidane is not a backstabber.

I have a question for you and others, did we gain independence in 1971? Is this what an independent country looks like? If not then what exactly did we gain in 1971?

If you ask Indians they will tell you, 1947 partition was the greatest thing for them, Pakistani's also say partition was great for them. But was it great for Indian Muslims and Muslims of Bengal? Looks like Bengal Muslims tried to escape Hindu dominance with their support for partition and Pakistan, but did it work out for us? Did't we reestablish Hindu domination over East Bengal again in 1971 by breaking Pakistan, just so we can get away from West Pakistan domination?

I don't have all the answers, but it seems like we are going round and round in circles and there is no way out from this mess. As long as clueless Bangladeshi's are proud of their so called "independence", as long as both Khaleda and Hasina compete to show who is the greatest supporter of so called "war of independence/liberation" in 1971, then I see no hope for our nation. Perhaps its a good thing. Because of our actions in the past we deserve to be Indian colony or vassal state (our achievement so far since 1971), whatever you like to call it and through this suffering may be Bangladeshi people will learn what kind of "independence" India gave them in 1971. That time has not come yet. So the suffering will go on, this is only the start.

Another thing, I consider Khaleda and Tariq to be bigger threats for Bangladesh than Hasina, as they are incompetent and give people false hopes. That is why India will never remove them, because once they are removed, no one knows who will fill that vacuum. So it is risky for India to remove them. So this drama will go on, India will hang the carrot in front of Khaleda and Tariq to return them to power, but the carrot will never be reachable, unless there is some accident, in which case may be they will become the B team for India. So with both Khaleda and Hasina, India wins but people of Bangladesh loose.

The people who speak the truth openly are people like Mahmudur Rahman (in jail) and Sheikh Mohiuddin of sheikhnews.com and many others like them. Khaleda and Tariq are focused on getting to power by any means, but they do not speak the truth, specially about India. They need to come clean with people of Bangladesh.

You sound like Hasina is a vey democratic leader and AL leaders are all MR. CLEAN. The state residence of the PM was given to Hasina as her personal property, now I call that 'looting' or plundering state property. So,cut your crap and stay in your rat hole.
i don't agree with @aazidane completely but i agree with him on one thing, BNPwalas have been pathetic. i don't quite get aazidane's remarks that BNP has conceded to rogue Indian wishes recently. i would rather argue BNP, for the major part of its existence, has not been able to fully operate outside the BAL-leftist ("pro India") sphere of influence.

with one more opposition leader shot dead, hanged or kidnapped, we are descending deeper into trouble and there won't be any coming back out of it. whoever was wanting to destroy Bangladesh is having the time of their lives now.

now BAL clearly thinks it is invincible. it not only "legally" murders opposition leaders, it shows how displeased it is as well when people protest such atrocity.

i agree with @kalu_miah that as long as such ridiculous words like "independence" are used to describe the 1971 crisis, we are effed up as a nation and begging to be a little prison version of India. if anyone got independence in 1971, it was rogue Indian interests that got independent. if anything had its sanctity totally stripped off in 1971, it was the people and this land. if a Bangladeshi doubts any of this, it is about time they descend from the clouds.

I certainly have a job offer from the BNP to work for their foreign affairs team, I am mulling over it.
