What's new

BN signed a contract for two more Type 053H3 frigates, including ex- Putian (pennant number 523)

And the production of Type 054A FFG and Type 052C DDG for PLAN has stopped already.
Maybe Type 054B FFG would come out soon, or Type 052DG DDG just replaces it.

DDG usually does not replace the FFG hull, the size difference may be a bit much.

054B is more appropriate for us to adopt as standard, most images show AESA or PESA on the stealth mast, which is absolutely necessary to have as tracking sensors for the VLS LRSAM or MRSAM situation.

I don't know if someone has seen 054B under construction yet.

In fact, China can product and export FFGs equipped with small AESA radars, just like European ones, but they are not what PLAN needs.

China has launched 24 Type 052D DDGs and 6 Type 055 DDGs, and Type 054A FFG just needs to focus on its anti-sub mission and others.

Thanks for the explanation, but I understand that 054A/P FFG's being made for Pakistan in China (four) are for strengthening PN's naval Air Defense capability. That is one of their primary function. I could be wrong - but this is what I have read so far.

@Quwa bhai sorry for the bother but could you please confirm this?

Also @LKJ86 - the point (I thought) we were discussing, is building boats IN BANGLADESH using Chinese ToT for use in BANGLADESH NAVY (*not* PLAN), for specialized usage by BN, (namely air defense and later, if needed, anti sub warfare). PLAN can build whatever it wants for its own usage, but that is not what we are discussing here.

I understand that if BN was to go with Chinese design, it will be based on Type-054A hull but with MFD AESA radar and 32-cell universal VLS that could carry the whole range of Chinese missiles like HQ-9, HQ-16(quad-packed),Cruise Missiles and anti-submarine rockets.
China would just use a smaller MFR AESA radar and less VLS cells than on the Type-052D destroyer.

The amount of firepower on these ships will be comparable to the new destroyers that India is building for half the cost.

Thanks bhai. I was going to post a lengthy pros/cons piece comparing the various possible AESA radar choices but that'll have to wait a bit. Can HQ-9, HQ-16 missiles be tracked with SELEX Italian AESA radars for example? That is the million dollar question. I'm sure if we buy non-Chinese AESA radar it will be from Leonardo.

@Bilal9

I would try to avoid Western for our frigate programme as the target is India.
BN needs to be able to fire on India with no worry on source codes or supply in case of conflict.

Good call. However I realize that we are already a pretty significant customer of Italian radars and sensors for army/air force. We also use plenty of Kelvin Hughes and other Western Sensors for our frigates already.

You are saying we should wean ourselves away from Western sensors then?

Not totally as Myanmar is a bit of a pest.

Going for Western systems for next-gen frigate would not be wise as US and most of EU is likely to favour India due to economic and geopolitical reasons.

Are the next 2 type053h3 already been decommissioned and sent for refurbishment? or are they still active in PLAN?
What is the exact time when the 2 frigates will be handed over to BN?

. .
BN's primary mission is to keep the sea lanes of BD open and only the next-gen frigates will provide any deterrence to India.

Myanmar is just a little pest for a country like BD many times larger in population and GDP.
Comparing GDP is not wise when dealing with Myanmar. Myanmar's GDP may be 5 times smaller than Bangladesh in paper but remember that they have a massive amount of wealth from illegal drugs and jade business which is not part of their regular GDP. Myanmar as a country is quite poorer, but their armed forces is filthy rich for sure. Don't think that Myanmar would not be able to make a modern and well equipped army just by looking at their GDP because they have lots of illegal businesses.

So you just admit that the armed forces are bunch of criminals?
