QUETTA: At least 14 people were killed and over 10 injured in an explosion near a polio centre in Quetta's Satellite Town on Wednesday, Balochistan Home Minister Mir Sarfaraz Bugti said.

"The blast was apparently carried out by a suicide bomber," said Bugti, speaking to media after the blast.

Thirteen of the dead are policemen while one of them is an FC officials, he said.

The casualties have been shifted to Civil Hospital Quetta, where an emergency has been imposed.

Eyewitnesses at the site said they heard firing after a loud blast rocked the area.

Police and rescue workers reached the site soon after the blast, while security forces have cordoned off the area. The nature of the blast is unknown as yet.

Today is the third day of a three-day anti-polio campaign which was launched in Quetta and other districts of Balochistan on Monday.

The campaign is to target 2.4 million children under the age of five. Over 55,000 children of Afghan refugees are to be immunised under the campaign.

Polio teams were being dispatched from the polio centre targeted today in the blast, security sources said.

Pakistan remains one of only two countries on the World Health Organisation's (WHO) list of polio-endemic countries.

Polio workers have long been targeted in the country due to rumours that the polio immunisation drive is a front for espionage or a conspiracy to sterilise Muslims. The rumours have made inhabitants of lesser-developed parts of the country more wary of allowing immunisation.

This is a developing story and will be updated accordingly.

Pakistan has to go after TTP leadership hiding in Afghanistan delaying is only costing us more and more lives. Pakistan needs to go after TTP leaders and go for Hot Pursuit.

Scumbag Takfiris. They kill human beings to protect polio virus and saving it from extinction. That is how much they value human lives.

Pakistan military should continue its operation against Takfiris with extra resolve. Killing school children by attacking schools and trying to save polio virus from extinction by attacking polio vaccination teams only shows how low these creatures are.

They are missionaries working for money and have lot of brain dead zombies like creatures can blow themselves anywhere on orders of their handlers, As Mr. Ajit Doval claims they can spend money to use elements against Pakistan we should eliminate all these missionaries and seal off Afghan border ASAP. They are financed by many Indian embassies in Afghanistan we should raise this issue with Afghan Govt and USA if they don't listen us blow these terror funding centers. No other solution possible.

Sponsored by RAW, a proxy war staged in the lawns of embassies in Afghanistan.

You were the one who were crying foul when people blamed ISI for "pathankot", and saying no proof...... and here you concluded with in minutes/hours that this RAW sponsored, there is a word called "hypocrisy", and this could be a good example.....

Is it not the revenge of pathankot attack?
Not a revenge but one of a long series of coward attacks in Pakistan, they target polio teams so that our children deprived off basic medical needs and becomes useless a cowardly staged drama written and execute through proxies in Pakistan. When polio spreads in Pakistan no other nations allows Pakistanis to enter their country, they want two benefits from that short term and a long term, short term damage our efforts and defame us and in a long term they want to harm future of Pakistan our children.
