The US-China trade war brought blessings for the Biman Bangladesh Airlines, as the American aerospace giant Boeing Company has agreed to sell two Dreamliner aircraft at around 55 percent discounted rate to the national carrier.

The fourth largest air transport company of China, Hainan Airlines had ordered the two Dreamliner 787-9 planes from Boeing, but could not continue the payment due to financial crisis since last year.

The business of China's once high-flying conglomerate has been shrinking after the government scrutinised their debt-fuelled expansions and temporarily seized their business. The US-China trade war deepened the company's financial crisis and caused it to default in debt payment.

The Hainan Airlines Group, also known as the HNA, was one of China's most lucrative companies until it began facing liquidity challenges and pressure from the government.

The conglomerate has decided to sell assets worth more than $20 billion, ranging from properties to big shareholdings since 2018. The Chinese group has been selling real estate and shares worldwide.

The company agreed to sell its $8.5 billion stake in the USA, $376 million stake in the UK and additional stakes in other countries. The failure in payment of Hainan also put Boeing in trouble as it already readied the two ordered aircraft for delivery.

The Boeing Company, which also has been going through a crisis since its planes of 737 MAX series were grounded worldwide, offered Biman Bangladesh Airlines to purchase the two aircraft to avert some losses.

Biman then started negotiation and finalise the price at a discounted rate. The board of the national carrier approved the decision to purchase the two aircraft at a meeting on Wednesday.

Md Mokabbir Hossain, managing director and chief executive officer of Biman, confirmed the board's decision to The Business Standard.

"Biman had plans to increase its fleet but the offer from Boeing made the process faster," he said. Mokabbir, however, did not disclose the price of each aircraft.

He said Biman is planning to expand its business by extending the route plan. As part of the plan, the board decided to purchase the two new aircraft that are expected to join the fleet by this December.

The current market price of Boeing 787-9 with 298 seats is around $200 million.

The inclusion of the new aircraft will increase the total number of planes in the Biman fleet to 12. Sonali Bank will finance the purchase and Biman will begin making payments from this month.

Meanwhile, a senior Biman executive on condition of anonymity said, "The high expenditure in the fleet already caused a negative impact on Biman's cash flow as installments of loan payment have gone up.

"Moreover, the national carrier spent around $12 million this year for returning two leased aircraft to EgyptAir."

He added, "The board on Thursday approved the expenditure for returning the two leased aircraft, which had remained grounded for the past two years and caused huge losses to the national carrier.

"The compensation amount for returning the two leased aircraft and purchasing the new ones will affect Biman's profit this year," said the official.

Well getting these two planes at 55% discount is not a bad deal. Boeing is really in dire straits. They fired their Chairman and I believe their president will testify in front of a senate subcommittee next week. They might get fined even more and the stock is trading at an all time low. Time to buy!

This is what happens when govt. trusts private industry too much on inspections and standards-compliance.

Boeing was supposedly doing their own testing on the 737 MAX and giving themselves 'A's on everything! :lol:

That MCAS system on the 737 MAX (fed by the two front AOA sensors) had no redundant backup or shutoff feature.

This all happened because the engines are too front loaded now because of the stubby landing gear. Look at all the engine incidents on the new 737's including the MAX.

Better they keep producing other older 737 designs (not MAX) and work fast to ready the new 737 design (looks like a mini 787).

the 737 was designed in the 60s originally. There is only so much you can do with that.

Time for Boeing to make a fresh plane with no connections to the 737.

With airbus offerings on the table, no one will place new orders for older variants of 737... they fucked up big time... now they either fix this and pray to god or design an entire new aircraft for billions more down the drain.

Cash flow have nothing to do with profit its just cause pressure for payment . If operating cost is less in 787 then our profit will increase , moreover getting discount also reduces extra pressure for capital expenditure(200-110=90 million dollar investment er Aircraft ,ultimately a very good decision by Biman .

Biman returns last one after huge loss

Biman has finally got rid of the last of its two leased Boeing 777-200ER airplanes that have been causing the national flag carrier to incur huge losses for several years.

Leased from Egypt Air in 2014 for five years with stringent conditions that went against Biman’s interests, the extended range planes remained grounded since 2017 due to engine defects. One was returned to Egypt Air in July and the other on Tuesday.

Officials of Biman Bangladesh Airlines said the spare parts needed to repair the engines were unavailable.

The Tk-1,223 crore spent on these age-old planes is more than the price of a brand-new plane, they added.

Biman had to pay Tk 56 crore to Egypt Air for breaching the terms of lease, Tk 600 crore for lease, Tk 310 crore for leasing four engines, around Tk 250 crore to United Airlines for repairs, and around Tk 7 crore to Vietnam Airlines Engineering Company for using its Bay, officials added.

The amount of loss would have been greater if the civil aviation ministry had not engaged the foreign affairs ministry to negotiate with Egypt. Finally, the Egypt Air agreed to take back the planes and relax some of the conditions, Mohibul Haque, secretary at the civil aviation ministry, said.

As per the lease agreement, Biman was to pay Tk 10 crore a month to Egypt Air even if the planes remained grounded.

A probe by the Civil Aviation and Tourism Ministry in March concluded that the terms and conditions of the “non-transparent” lease agreement clearly went against Biman’s interests.

For instance, Biman was not allowed to void the agreement before five years, and once the deal expired, the carrier was supposed to return the planes exactly in the state in which they were received, the report said.

The probe body found that a section of Biman officials inked the non-transparent deal for personal gains, said a top civil aviation ministry official, quoting the probe report.

“The Biman officials involved in the agreement signing didn’t want the planes to fly. They apparently benefited while the planes remained grounded,” Mohibul said.

A senior official of the ministry said the government is identifying the officials who were responsible for the lease and those who delayed the process to return the planes.

The board of Biman Bangladesh Airlines on September 3 decided not to renew its contract with Sazzadur Rahim, director of engineering and material management, and suspended Ghazi Mahmud Iqbal, chief engineer of engineering services.

Since its inception in 1972, Biman has incurred losses due to corruption and mismanagement, aviation experts said.

The military-backed caretaker government in 2007 turned Biman into a public limited company with an aim to make it profitable. But that is still a far cry.

Except for three fiscals: 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17, Biman has been losing money since 2009-10, sources said.

Mohibul blamed the contentious lease agreement for the Boeing 777-200 ERs as a major cause for the loss.

With its fleet of 16 planes, Biman currently flies to 16 international and seven domestic destinations. Six of the aircraft are on lease.

How can they throw away a market leadership position like this?

737 was like their cash cow, they dedicated a whole separate assembly plant for this (Renton, south of their main assembly point at Everett for 777's, 747's and 787's).

They got too greedy, they used to be my favorite manufacturer until airbus aircrafts became more common and I see why that’s the case, airbus is superior in almost every way

The 737 is a seller and will continue to be a seller because airlines love and buy it by the ton. Yes, Boeing took a hit on its reputation for it and will have to compensate airlines for the grounding, but this doesn't mean the 737 MAX is a failure.

Once the problem is fixed and the aircraft is flying again, the orders will come. I would not bet against Boeing and its flagship aircraft.

Biman should gobble this up and buy anything else that comes up.

Cashflow will get better with better management. Demand is there and thats the main thing.

In terms of aircraft design.... its all about engines... the latest engines are massively fuel efficient.

Biman can fly to capacity to to middle east and asia and select european destinations such as UK and italy that has big diaspora.

Take the plunge Biman, expand ....bd economy needs it.
