US President Joe Biden and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi agreed in a telephone call to strengthen Indo-Pacific security through the Quad grouping of countries that is seen as a way to push back against China’s growing assertiveness in the region.

India, United States, Japan and Australia are members of the Quad, an informal group that Washington has been promoting to work as a potential bulwark against China’s increasing political, commercial and military activity in the Indo-Pacific, diplomats say.

Biden spoke to Modi on Monday night in his first call since taking office last month and noted that India-US ties were held together by a shared commitment to democratic values.

“The leaders agreed to continuing close cooperation to promote a free and open Indo-Pacific, including support for freedom of navigation, territorial integrity, and a stronger regional architecture through the Quad,” the White House said in a statement.

China has denounced the Quad as an attempt to contain its development and urged the United States to drop its “Cold War mentality”.

Last year, the four countries held joint naval exercises in the Bay of Bengal after New Delhi dropped its hesitation for fear of antagonising Beijing.

Modi told Biden he would work to elevate the strategic partnership between the two countries, the Indian foreign ministry said in its readout of the call.

India is locked in a military standoff with China over their disputed mountainous border since April and public opinion has hardened against Beijing after soldiers were killed in a clash there.

Japan’s Sankei newspaper reported over the weekend that the leaders of the United States, Japan, India, and Australia plan to hold a summit, in a further tightening of ties between the four powerful democracies.

Biden and Modi also agreed to work closely to fight Covid-19, renew their partnership on climate change and defend democratic institution and norms around the world, including in Myanmar, where the military seized power last week.

India is digging a grave for itself by going against china and the USA is an unreliable friend that can be confirmed from its history. I think it would have been more gaining if India has stayed neutral or sided with china. South Asia may then have become the superpower of the world just like Europe for the USA.

Seriously, we got here a well meaning Pakistani. Thank you. Let us worry about us.

You have hit the nail on the head and got it right.
Actually they need us to hold off you know whom. 😉😉

20 indians soldiers who had their skulls cracked open and their brain matter splattered all over the Galway Valley by the PLA will strongly disagree........... :azn:

by the way from that statement, I meant why not make relations with neighbors well like the European country and uplift the whole of South Asia? what will you get from the USA who just wants his sole hegemony and control over the world?

India never intended to do all this. This entire mess was created by China showing unnecessary aggression.

Moreover, India knows how to play its card and would never get into any camp. That’s how India has been able to engage Russia as well as US. Similarly, India has been also keeping its options open by keeping France also to supply some military hardware. US today needs someone badly to balance against China. What leverage has it on India? Nothing because unlike Pakistan in 70s and 80s India is not dependent completely on US for military hardware.

Coming to QUAD. It is more of an alliance against evil designs of CCP and CHINA. If US backs off, does it impact India?

Meanwhile India is feverishly working to indigenise its military hardware. It’s dependence on foreign vendors is going to reduce everyday.

This entire scenario was definitely avoidable. Hopefully, it wouldn’t escalate. But the ball is in the Chinese court. If it plays bad then it might force India to join a group which it has avoided since independence.

Yes they will and even those unknown, unsung, unrecognised, unhonoured PLA soldiers too.

I think China would not have shown this unnecessary aggression and maybe before the aggression china has seen India going against china for the USA? By the way, I think we need to make peace within South Asia and that benefits us more if we can make that happen and this is for all; China, India, and Pakistan.

That's quite a naieve viewpoint.

I like it, it's a hallmark of those who enter discussions with the members on the other side of the fence. I sincerely hope you don't let repeated instances of trollish behaviour colour your perceptions, some just are in it for the fun.

I'd rather we work towards regional integration but our history is replete with such attempts and the ensuring fallouts. We've too much bad blood, it'll take a gargantuan amount of diplomacy and a lot of time to bring us together.

I fully agree with you on this. Peace in a region is must for prosperity. Billions of dollars getting wasted on military hardware could have gone towards poverty alleviation in India.

India having good relations with US had nothing to do as a move against China. US is a superpower and having good relations with it is good for trade and business. Formation of QUAD and similar moves in the future are doing of China. India would have probably remained out of it, had it not been for Chinese aggression.

The basic problem is the lack of trust in South Asian countries about one another. Only consistent dialogue for a long time can reduce this mistrust among these countries.
